Brunch with the family...and a selfie since it was requested as "challenge" (ie, I am apparently fake and could not possibly have a clothed photo of me smiling if I was a content creator/catfish/whatever) so here is yet another because

With those eyes and that smile you can wear all the clothes you want and still be considered sexy and beautiful.

On one hand, another beautiful picture.
On the other hand, you do not owe the trolls anything. 💐💐💐

thanks for all of the lovely compliments everyone! I am off to see Gladiator II!!!!

My dog, the one I grew up with, was named Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.

Yes his name was Maximus, named after the film! Ha!

Have a good evening all and for sure, Ill be entertained!!!

Love to hear your review. I'm skeptical if it can be anywhere as good as the first ... 🎥🎬

Gladiator II

I hope to make this spoiler free, but I am afraid one issue I have with the film is a small spoiler, but I dont think its a big reveal since its strongly alluded to in the trailers. Ill mention AT THE END.

So without giving away too much plot or any "secrets", the movie is certainly entertaining. It is definitely bloody/violent/grimy if you like seeing people get speared or limbs hacked off.
The used some of the same music as before, which includes the great song "Now We are Free" (
or
)

Denzel Washington was his usual terrific self...if anyone gets nominated for this, itll be him I would think. Jospeh Quinn plays the emperor (you may know him as Eddie from Stranger Things), and Pedro Pascal is a general. There are also a few familiar faces in the background, either from the original film, or actors you may recognize from other films...a guy from "300", a host from "The Great British Bake Off" and more.

Anyway, is the film fun and entertaining? Yes. Was there good action? Yes. Was it mostly predictable? You bet...far too easy to sort out who was good and evil and who would die etc. But its an action movie first and foremost so...so whatever? Did the film need to be made, was is epic etc? No. I found it to be less "powerful" or exciting and engrossing or whatever as the first. It was not original, the story was VERY similar to the first one...like...WAY TOO MUCH. And you probably could have cut 15-20 min out of it as well...it was a notch long it seemed.
I am glad to have watched it for sure. It isnt a thumbs down. It just isnt a bigtime thumbs up.

---SPOILERS BELOW---

So in the first film, we learn Maximus' wife and child are murdered. You see the kid hanging in his house, he declares it in the arena, etc.
In Gladiator II, that still happened, but he apparently also has a kid with Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, who was Commodus' sister in the film) when they were lovers for a bit (apparently before he got married and lived in Spain?). That kid is Lucius, who was the little kid in the first film that Maximus talks to a couple times, who is now grown up and the star in this film.
Ok...I can buy all of that, even though it is mightily convenient, but how come Lucilla never said anything in the first film..."hey this is your son!" right? Dunno. Just bothered me!

My guess is they never planned on the 2nd movie.
So even if they had intended to explore that storyline angle, it never made it out of the editing room.
Which if true is a bit of a bummer, but the first move was epic and never appeared to be missing anything....until now I guess.

Couldn't agree more, it doesn't stack up in the slightest and reeks of 'how can we retrofit the old film into the new one in a way that lets us use a lot of the symbols/iconography of it without looking weird'. And I wouldn't say they entirely succeeded with that.

And that's before the CGI sharks..

Thanks for the review.
(I skipped reading the spoilers, just in case I decide to watch the movie later.)

I definitely enjoyed the first movie, a lot. Russell Crowe played his role incredibly well, and that alone would've made this movie difficult to stand up to the first.

Thanks for that detailed review Kat! The original film holds a special meaning for me. During the last few years my wife and I traveled a lot. In Tuscany, I saw the home that he was going to in the final scene, when he goes home to Spain. In Morocco, we visited the town that he trained in the first movie, and saw the stadium for the second movie ( I think the stadium itself was CGI, but the place where the scenes take place).

If you go in with the mindset of "this isnt going up for best picture"...but just "I wanna see some decent battles, decent acting, and no major stupid stupid scenes/plotholes/whatever" then youll be fine.

and yes as someone mentioned above...the sharks were over the top.
I love Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in the first film and felt he really made the movie for me. I also love the music of Hans Zimmer and understand he did not compose the soundtrack for the sequel.

Neither of these absences will keep me away from seeing the sequel though as I really like Pedro Pascal, Jospeh Quinn and Derek Jacobi and Denzel is an absolute legend. I see that Gregson-Williams composed the Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack so I’ll bet he’s done a good job here too.

Appreciate your review!!

Excellent review Kit! Honestly don't remember completely watching gladiator but I likely watched it when it came out on DVD when I was young so there's that. I figured that Gladiator would be better than it's sequel.

Did they jump the shark with the sharks then? Like when Happy days went to far and Fonzie jumped the shark? 😂

haha it wasnt a junp the shark moment, but it was an addition that wasnt necessary but...everyone seems to enjoy watching someone get bitten by a shark so they added it. It makes no sense how the Romans caught, transported, and kept alive 5-7 sharks to use in an arena battle.
