I finally finished Neal Stephenson's Anathem. 932 pages, and it easily could have been half that without losing anything in the way of entertainment or artistic achievement. I liked it at times, but found its length and diversions annoying and tedious. It's no Snow Crash or Cryptonomicon.

Now I'm 150 pages into Donald Miller's Vicksburg. So far it's a very well written and detailed account of the famous Civil War battle. It does a nice job explaining the importance of the city/fort and it has a refreshingly interesting emphasis on the issue of slavery as it affected the campaign and as the campaign affected it. If you like war history you'd probably like it.

I like to alternate fiction and nonfiction. It keeps things from getting repetitive.
