Why Election Results Might Take Days

In two swing states—Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—election workers are prohibited by state law from processing absentee and mail-in ballots until Election Day. More than 2 million voters in Pennsylvania have requested mail-in ballots this year, and more than 80 percent have already been returned. In other states, those returned ballots would be getting opened, verified, and counted already—and those totals would be quickly reported once the polls closed. In Pennsylvania, however, that won't happen.

The same thing is true in Wisconsin, where about 500,000 mail-in ballots have been requested. If either state's presidential election is close, which seems likely, it will likely be impossible to declare a winner on Tuesday. And if either state is critical to determining the overall winner, which also seems possible, the outcome of the election may remain uncertain for several days.

Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt, a Republican, told NPR two weeks ago that it is unlikely that a winner will be determined before the clock strikes midnight on Election Day.

I've enjoyed 538's coverage because of its heavily data-driven approach: https://abcnews.go.com/538. In the past it's liveblogging has been pretty fair and incisive. I enjoyed it more when Nate Silver was running it. Now he has his own site at https://www.natesilver.net/p/nate-silver-2024-president-election-polls-model.

I cannot recall an election being this close in the polling on the eve of the election, ever. 2000 was a nail biter, but I don't think the final polls were quite this close. It will be very interesting to see if there are any discernible late trends as the results begin to come in.

I was about to make the point against your claim of a coup replaced Biden on the ticket with Harris by pointing out that the independent party also nominated their candidate ay their convention held at the Saginaw Elk Lodge and it took, checking my notes, 7 roll call votes before they selected Chase Oliver and only after he had formed a coalition with another candidate who he named his vp. This is a surprise for me. I have been reading the inky version of the Daily Mail all my life. It has changed very much over the last couple of years following the retirement of its legendary editor Paul Dacre a couple of years ago and is now pushing its brand in overseas markets. But it is first and foremost a United Kingdom publication.

Is there not a neutral publication in the United States that would be acceptable to all shades of opinion to provide a running results service?
