In R-world, that means almost unlimited defense spending even though at the same time they push for isolationism and withdrawal from world affairs. Those are incompatible positions. In terms of social spending, neither party has an interest in reducing it, if for no other reason that 1/3 of the nation is on some kind of housing and food assistance and another 1/3 is on social security/medicare/medicaid (which, incidentally, Rs have been trained not to consider socialism but can't talk about it). If either party went after the social programs Congress would flip at the next mid-term and they know that. Not happening. So after social programs and interest on the skyrocketed national debt (last balanced budget was Clinton's), allowing for a large defense spend, all that's left is "discretionary spending" that, as a percentage of the budget, is quite small.

Perhaps you or your mother/grandma get their checks, and can go to a doctor. What would private insurance cost for an 80 year old, or a 70 year old, but for Medicare in country that spends upwards of 17% of its GDP on healthcare? What would be reasonable - $40,000 / year?

America goes through cycles, and this isn't the first time that the robber baron industrialists, sensing their power and entitlement, want to sweep the cupboards of everybody else. And as before, they enlist masses of common people and convince them for other reasons that to do otherwise is bad or stupid based on thin "principles." Eventually, the masses realize that they've been conned, and flip the script. That is American political history and the cycle we are in now.

You see, it's all a game and you (not personally) are but a pawn. The issue isn't spending, but blocking spending on what the other side wants so to set conditions to spend on what your side wants (in this case, largely further corporate and wealthy tax cuts, under the supply side theory). Both sides play the game, sir.

In contrast, nearly every state in the US must pass a balanced budget each year, no bill can have multiple subjects (in order to stop pork barrel), and every cycle has both an operating and capital budget, but the US government has none of those things. A lot of folks think similar at a federal level would be a good thing.

Instead, the US (both parties) borrow like mad, calculate "grow" and "savings" to "pay" for things over 20 or more years, that is to say fake accounting, and that's how you get to a $34T debt. There's plenty of room for reasonable people to work it out, but in the contentious and largely crazy posturing, there is no "responsible" management. Only rhetoric and misleading the public, in my opinion.

So today we have economic "plans" because you have to have one, and in the case of DJT his people have him talking about 1880s economics, that is to say tariffs, to "pay for everything." But the world is very different now, and economically interlinked. Thus, in his last term he hit China with tariffs, who for their part were not particularly upset because they did the same on American soybeans and account for about 2/3 of the US farm export. After panic at home set in - not in China - DRT pushed through an immediate $10b subsidy back to the farmers for "relief." Did that cause inflationary pressures on commodities? You betcha.

For her part, Harris would tax the top tier wealthy much more but want to spend on any number of areas that would be pleasing on the ground.

Nobody, neither party, manages anything. If they did, they never would have agreed to the Pharma prices and prohibit price negotiation (actually they made it a federal crime) that drives up health care costs, spend, share of GDP, and yes, inflation.

A pox on both. But I'm going with Harris. The other dude is flat nuts and too much of a risk. And if he doesn't wake up one morning, who knows what we'll get.

Just me, no worries on my part if you see it another way.
