California Politician Agrees to Resign, Plead Guilty to Bribery Conspiracy for Covid-Relief Scheme

A California Republican in local politics agreed to resign and plead guilty to accepting more than $550,000 in bribes between 2020 and 2023 as part of a conspiracy to funnel over $10 million in Covid-19 relief funds to a nonprofit connected to one of his daughters, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Do abused his power by voting in favor of and directing millions of dollars in state and federal Covid-related funds to Viet America Society (VAS), the U.S. attorney’s office for the Central District of California said in a press release. He did not disclose the charity’s connections to his 23-year-old daughter, Rhiannon.

The funds were intended to provide meals for the elderly and needy, but they were instead used to benefit companies affiliated with VAS, Do’s family, other conspirators, and Do himself.

“This money was intended to provide meals to the people who needed most in our community,” U.S. attorney Martin Estrada said during a Tuesday press conference. “The scheme essentially functioned like Robin Hood in reverse.” Only 15 percent of $9.3 million in taxpayer dollars went toward feeding people in need, Estrada noted.

a few points about this story:

he 'agrees to resign' as he pleads guilty... 'agrees to resign'??? his arse should have been dragged from his position, not it being a case of his acquiescing

he may spend up to five years in prison... JUST five years? for robbing so many in need at such a desperate time of so much funding, like millions of dollars?! kids have gone to prison for decades just for having weed!

when such rampant corruption is punished so lightly, is it any wonder the corrupt take such advantage?

Sounds like something out of Borat, the way she describes it.
 
We could spend the rest of our life pissing and moaning about corruption. It's in every walk of life around us from the church to charities, police, Boy Scouts, first responders, government, officials, and practically all businessmen and women...doctors and people who bill to Medicare. The main reason many people aren't corrupt is because they simply don't have the opportunity.
It takes a lot of tax money to catch the bad guys and no one wants to spend the money.

Well, it turns out that the bad guys who catch the bad guys work at the same corporation...

... even take lunch together, on our dime, of course, because there is such a thing as a free lunch...​
 
We could probably balance the budget on what has been stolen from the defense dept and Medicare over the last 20 years... but heaven forbid the government wants to hire more government workers to reign in these criminals. Remember the fiasco when Biden wanted to hire more IRS people...The people who actually find and prosecute!
So often in our newspapers we read of medical people, doctors etc, who have been caught stealing millions from Medicare, so they go to jail but the money is gone.

Rick Scott’s company was fined $1.7 billion for defrauding Medicare. Republicans decided that qualified him to be a Senator!

The party of fraud and disorder. 👍
