A check on the passions of the mob, just like the Senate, which the mob got changed and now wants "reformed" as they now attack both the Supreme Court and the Electoral College and when they win that battle, then passion will rule and tyranny will ensue. The strong man will emerge.

It's a classic cycle.

In the ashes of tyranny, hopefully a Republic will arise anew, but as we see in the Banana Republics, it never seems to gain firm foothold as they people pale to the next promising tyrant.
