Oh, ok. I guess that makes sense, but that's not really my style. I like to praise, it makes me feel good. And I hope it makes the recipient feel good, too. I would never use it as an attempt to earn anything.

I hear you and see it well. From the perspective of the trying to hard husband there is a hope that it will have an effect on the overwhelmed, stressed wife. After a while hoping that the praise will earn some better connection or recognition knowing your partner is trying. And eventually yes feeling hurt or childish that it's not working.
