What's going on here? (Possibly AI related)

It's one thing to encounter AI stories that are good enough that one can't reliably distinguish them from human written, as we've seen now and again on Lit. (Are there fewer such posts these days?) But here's a whole other level of annoyance. When I wake up my Kindle, the first screen I see is an advertisement for a book. They seem legitimate, and sometimes are by authors I've heard of, like Daniel Steele.

But over the last few weeks most of them are typo laden, no author "books." I don't know if this has to do with AI or not. It seems not, because AI is pretty good at spelling, right?

I went to the r/kindle subreddit to ask the question of what's going on, and this was the answer.

We're getting so many posts grumbling about AI ads, so they're now being removed. Think yours was one of 3 just that day.
You can still see the responses, so you got your answer, but it saves the sub being flooded with the same question.

I don't know if this stuff is really AI generated or not, but it's really annoying to have my life so cluttered with clutter!!!!

Have any of you had the same experience?

I've seen other media outlets covering this: I don't know about the advertising specifically, but garbled AI-generated books are being uploaded to Amazon Kindle in their thousands, because it's a process which essentially costs nothing (run the AI to generate 25,000 words of incoherent narrative; AI generate a title and cover; bulk upload it to Amazon). I don't know what they're hoping to gain from this, apart from maybe a handful of mistaken purchases?

Neal Stephenson's "Anathem" deals in passing with this - the age of Rampant Orphan Botnets, Artificial Inanity systems and an entire class of IT worker whose jobs is basically reputation-based policing of the Internet and the sorting of all information into high-reputation, high-fidelity stuff and low-rep, low-fi "bullshit".

And reality is now imitating fiction.

This is obvious junk, either AI generated in the first place, or scraped from non-English sites and "translated" into whatever that language is meant to be. This is the equivalent of really bad graffiti on the underside of a bridge.

We may possibly be on the verge of a Blade Runner scenario, except it will be all software at the beginning; no androids needed (yet!). I'm almost glad that I won't be around to see how this plays out. There is a dystopian feel to it in that we will never be sure any longer of what is human and what is software.

Was Deckard actually AI?

What kind of a prompt do you put in, if these "books" are AI creations? "Make a book cover and absurdly misspell one third of the wirds." ???? And why????

Was this posted as text, or are you transcribing from a cover image?

Text-based generative AI (GPT etc.) is usually good on spelling and punctuation. But if somebody's using an image-based AI to create the cover including the text, those will often create these kinds of misspellings and nonsense words.

Example: https://www.vice.com/en/article/4a389b/ai-midjourney-rat-penis-study-retracted-frontiers (content note: implausibly large AI-generated rat wang)

Thanks! My question is answered.
Now I have a new question. How do these nonsense books ever get onto the best seller list even for 1 day, never mind 3? Who is clicking on them?????

In some categories, you might only need to sell a handful of copies to be the day's best-seller. This guy made "Amazon bestseller" with just three purchases:

https://medium.com/the-mission/behi...t-selling-author-3-and-5-minutes-ec05cee1749a

And after your dummy accounts have bought a book, it may be possible to return it as an "accidental purchase" for a refund.

Cover image. Thank you!!!

Thank you again!!!!

Cover image. Thank you!!!

Aha, that's what I guessed.

Yeah, those ones are just generating "text" as part of the image. So making correctly spelled words, let alone putting them into a coherent sentence, is about as difficult as drawing hands.

@mirafrida provided an answer. The answer is that this stuff is "slop." A new technical term. Here's their post with a link to a great (depressing) article.

The grossly obvious AI "books" seem to have disappeared from my Kindle opening page, but I saw this in a daily list of featured erotic books, standard bare chested hunk on the cover, but the title was "The Wolf I Sworn to Hate." Not a native-born English speaker or AI?

I read a terrifying article the other day about what AI can do to some small web-based businesses. I've become more tolerant of Literotica's mistakes in their effort to save us from a deluge of garbage. Although I don't see the motivation for a deluge, since people can't earn money from publishing here.
