Federal appeals court blocks remainder of Biden’s student debt relief plan

BY ANNIE MA, ASSOCIATED PRESS - 07/18/24 10:46 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court blocked the implementation of the Biden administration’s student debt relief plan, which would have lowered monthly payments for millions of borrowers.

In a ruling Thursday, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a motion for an administrative stay filed by a group of Republican-led states seeking to invalidate the administration’s entire student loan forgiveness program. The court’s order prohibits the administration from implementing the parts of the SAVE plan that were not already blocked by lower court rulings.

The ruling comes the same day that the Biden administration announced another round of student loan forgiveness, this time totaling $1.2 billion in forgiveness for roughly 35,000 borrowers who are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

The PSLF program, which provides relief for teachers, nurses, firefighters and other public servants who make 120 qualifying monthly payments, was originally passed in 2007. But for years, borrowers ran into strict rules and servicer errors that prevented them from having their debt cancelled. The Biden administration adjusted some of the programs rules and retroactively gave many borrowers credits towards their required payments.

We've known that for a while it just usually doesn't affect anything.

Just remember when Republicans CLAIM they want better lives for Americans that they actively fight to keep things bad.

Obeying the law is never "bad." What the courts determined is that old Joey isn't doing that.

And yet you support the guy who is BREAKING THE LAW because... why again?

Oh yes, that's right, it's because you have TDS and can't see how badly it has infected your reality.

Which law is he breaking again? As far as we can tell NONE.

The one that prohibits him from encroaching on the exclusive province of the legislature and enacting laws instead of administering them.

It's called the Separation of Powers and it's right there in the Constitution.

They get burned because they have no allegiance to the Constitution and no desire to govern from within its limits on their power. These people at the top are not traditional Americans. They are the enemy of our constitutional structure. They laugh at their oath of office, and the ordinary American. The Courts are all that stand between us and a totalitarian nightmare.

So really he's hurting your feelings not actually breaking any laws. I mean we all knew that but still. Over the decades its become obvious to pretty much all the people in charge that the executive doesn't really wield the kind of power needed to do a damn thing.

You support a 34-time convicted felon and say this hypocritical bullshit.

What the hell is the matter with you?

Trump's convictions for "felonious bookkeeping" aren't a national issue. Biden's continual and repeated attempts to subvert the Constitution are.

Which now raises the question; what the hell is the matter with you that you'd support someone who will willingly take away any and all of your Constitutional Rights with the stroke of a pen, while also saying he knows he doesn't have the power to do it but is going to do it anyway?

The LEGISLATURE makes the law. Bidfen's job is to administer those laws. When Biden decides he's above the law and that he can just make up his own laws, then he is BREAKING THE LAW.

I know it's hard for someone like you to wrap your tiny brain around htis concept, but someone who uses his authority to act ILLEGALLY and then enforces that illegal acts against YOU, that person isn't anything except a tyrant regardless of how much you don't like the other guy.

Welcome to reality you tyrant supporting piece of shit.

In theory the legislature makes the law. In practice that hasn't been how it has really worked. Also its up to his discretion to apply the law at any point. Its not difficult to wrap my head around. You support a man who is literally running on the idea that he's above the law. You lost any credibility whatsoever on that front when that wasn't something to shut down.

What law exactly did Biden make by the way. Not what did he try to enact since all presidents do that what is the name of the law?

In practice that's EXACTLY how it works and has always worked right up until Obama and his phone and pen schtick happened. Joe tried to do an end run and created a program of taxpayer relief targeted at a specific group without authorization from Congress. The courts shot that down the first time and old Joe didn't get the message so he tried it a second time. The courts have now determined that the second attempt is ALSO ILLEGAL.

It's fairly obvious that Joe is the one who thinks he's above the law based on his repeated attempts to act like a fascist dictator and do whatever he wants to do regardless of whether he has the authority or not. You can ignore that to your own peril but don't ask the rest of America to follow you down into that sewer.

OTOH, Trump isn't running on being above the law. The GOP platform is based on a RETURN TO LAW AND ORDER. Which is why the police orgs across the nation are supporting him.

He committed fraud on the way to the presidency, 🤡. No need for the quotes. He was convicted in court by a jury of American citizens. Unanimously.

It's not my fault you don't believe in our citizenship or courts.

Trump's convictions have legal issues which will require the appellate court to sort out. Until that's over all you have is a lot of noise and smoke. Noise and smoke you're using as much as possible to deflect from the inadequacies of your preferred candidate rather than telling us how an 81 year old man suffering from dementia and age is going to last another 4 years in the worlds highest stress job.

Keep having these little fantasies. And no, he was convicted by a corrupt judge, an even more corrupt DA, and a jury of Democrats who consciously perverted the course of justice and should all be in jail.

OBama, The president with the fewest EOs in how many decades? THAT OBAMA? We're pissed that unlike Bush and Trump he didn't understand that he had that power and should absolutely use it. It is not obvious that Joe thinks he's above the law. He has gone above and beyond to work within the system to his own detriment.

Trump IS running on being above the law. The Supreme Court and yourself have seconded that motion. There is no way around that.

dudly, if the Supreme Court issued an opinion in favor of Trump, then that's the law and anything in opposition to that is what is against the law.

You don't have to like it but saying that the highest judicial authority in the nation is assisting someone to break the law is just stupid.

Which part is "fantasy?" Go back into hiding, loser.

34 convictions.

The end.

34 appeals.

So not yet the end.

I'm wondering how much you're going to cry when the convictions are vacated by Merchan before Trump even appeals them.

I don't cry about things, 🤡. I also don't wear diapers for fun or maxi pads on my ear.

Unlike some.

Yes which means that nothing Biden does is illegal per their ruling. I don't like it. It is disgusting but that is the exact power vested in him.
