Why Do Some Coins Have Ridged Edges?​



You’ve probably noticed that of the four coins that are in wide circulation in the United States today, two, the dime and the quarter, have a series of ridges on the edge. According to the U.S. Mint, this is technically referred to as a reeded edge. But is the reeded edge purely decorative, or does it serve a purpose? The answer goes all the way back to the 17th century, before the U.S. was even founded.

When the U.S. Mint opened in Philadelphia in 1793, the coins it produced were made of copper, silver, and gold, in accordance with the Coinage Act of 1792. Because coins of this era were made of precious metal, they were vulnerable to a practice known as clipping, which involved cutting off a small portion around the circumference of the coins. A skilled clipper would shave off enough from the coins to eventually amass a quantity of scrap metal worth cashing in, while also ensuring that the coins weren’t conspicuously reduced in size or weight, allowing the altered coins to still be spent.

Clipping had been common in 17th-century Europe, and it was so prevalent in England that by the end of that century, almost half of the silver content was absent from circulating English coins. This resulted in the metal composition of the coins being lower than their face value, a discrepancy that threatened to create a financial crisis throughout the continent, as well as in the European colonies. In order to combat the practice, England began minting coins with ridged edges; a smooth edge on any part of a coin would then be a telltale sign of clipping. When the United States was founded as an independent nation, the U.S. Mint followed suit by designing its higher denomination coins with reeded edges right from the beginning.


It took the US mint awhile to add reeds to the half dollars, but they did have their denomination struck on the edges, which was interestion.


Then there is the tale of the 1883 V nickel without the word "cents" on it.

They were afraid of coin clipping which clearly mattered with gold and silver coins, but with today's phony money the idea and need for milled or reeded edges is an absurdity.

Took the HfD to the shop for the 5th time to try to get the state vehicle safety inspection done. He was waiting for them (the fucking state, since it's their idea) to deliver via US mail the 25s for the new stickers - the expiration year. They finally showed up yesterday. They did the inspection at no cost because I had been up there several times for it. That was mighty decent of them - they sure as Hell didn't have to. Those are the kinds of things that are dying out in this no-service ecnomy of ours, and they are the kids of things that will cause Wat to go back.
 
I wonder sometimes about the group of hateful whingers we get in this thread. I mean, not much, but my touch of humanity, my tiny vibrant spark of feeling for my fellow humans, notes how hate-filled they are and how they think that they need to spread it, to show it. Everyone must know of their hate, especially those whom they hate most.


Of course, being Wat, I say, hate away. Hate to your heart's content. Wat knows how hate works - seen it before. These people build a monument to their hate, bitterness and resentment. Their bodies do it, they built the only kind of monument that they know how to build, and they work right along on it. That monument is a tumor. Cancer. Fast-growing hate spawned cancer. Right in the middle of their bodies, right where that nagging pain in the pit of the stomach lives. And it will metastasize quickly, likely to become fast-growing ass cancer. Right where their hate is grown, so will be grown the seed and source of their demise.


It would be sad if they were more worthwhile people, but they aren't. They thrive on hate, and this is what Allah in his infinite wisdom have decreed for them. They won't make average age (a quick search of Lit will reveal how many Litsters die well before their three-score-and-ten), but they sad part is, there will be no salvation for them. Allah prepares the spits for them in the hottest corner of Islamic Hell. The fires burn hotter, the tortures hurt more, and Eternity lasts longer.


Wat will make delicious sandwiches for himself and wash them down with tasty cool beverages and enjoy every moment, all extra-Eternity long. It is nice to be the favorite of Allah.
