If Joe is 25th'd or resigns the rules won't apply because a name will be on the ballot whether it's legal or not. The legal challenges over it will extend beyond the election in any case so the end result is that the rules are meaningless and will not/cannot be enforced.

All that will happen is another shit show where recriminations are thrown around like popcorn in a theater when the bad guy shows up. With just as much effect.

Special dispensation is what happens. The DNC will go to court and get a court order to put the new candidate's name on the ballot in every state where the deadline has passed or the change is refused.

Let's all face the truth here; we cannot have an uncontested Presidential election, the system will not allow that to happen. WE THE PEOPLE cannot allow that to happen either. 3rd party candidates aren't the answer to this problem either because those candidates are fringe/looney/no hope or possibility contestants.

This means that whatever rules there are will be suspended and/or bent or broken so that we have 2 names on the ballot - 1 from each major party.
