I read yesterday that Rubios, an old favorite for Mexican fast food in California is closing 48 restaurants and Mcdonald's is thinking about shutting down their entire California operation.

PS: Did you see that Newsom is backing off the schedule for raising the minimum wage for healthcare workers to $25 per hour? Wonder why.

In Australia, most Maccas (as they're called here) have ordering kiosks where you submit your order and pay, rather than the person at the counter taking your order and money. Is that the case in America now too? If so, I think that is a likelier explanation for job cuts than a minimum wage bump.

I've seen more and more of them here stateside of late. The one closest to me has one, but it's collecting dust in the lobby (I go drive thru 99% of the time). First time I ever saw a kiosk at Maccas was in Auckland New Zealand around 2019....do they still have "New York McMuffins" for breakfast ("brekkie"?) Down Under?

While I'm not sold this is really because of the increase in wages that's not the important detail. IF someone cannot make enough money working full time for your business to afford the basics within a reasonable distance of your business your business doesn't deserve to exist.

I would say city but I don't think I've ever worked in the same city I live in Maybe once.

he had a great idea, to close the budget deficit he would hike taxes on heavy duty trucks. he was warned that PA didnt have taxes and buyers would go there, he essentially said BS

Alright FINE, I'll discuss the real issue. Yes, I get the point you are trying to make; that McDonalds cannot make a profit in California due to the minimum wage being so high that it eats up all of their overhead costs. Yes, I understand the point.

My point is, I don't care because I don't eat at McDonalds and don't live in California.

McDonald's also increased the "franchise royalty fee" it charges franchisees to 5%, up from 4% on January 1, 2024. It only affects new units and existing units will be subject to it if they are sold by the franchisee.

Franchisees previously revolted in 2019 when McDonald's "upgraded" their technology systemwide and required franchisees to purchase these improvements at 300% markup from a McDonald's technology partnership.
