Thoughts on unhappy endings

So I’m working on these anyway but wanted some thoughts on what people think of very unhappy endings. I want to make a series in multiple categories. The series would be called “Unhappy Endings: Vx (insert name of protagonist). Here are some of the premises:

A white liberal elite woman from wealthy Connecticut family does charitable work in a very poor black town in rural Georgia. She focuses on a very brilliant, sweet yet totally unsophisticated black girl and gets her a full scholarship to a fancy DC university. About a month into school, the girl attends a frat party and winds up being the only female left with six of the upperclassmen, all privileged white guys, two of which have fathers in Congress. She’s very drunk and horny and lets them have her way with her. The students wear ski masks and film the whole thing. It starts with a blowbang circle, but ends up in a full-on three hole fuckfest. If you are looking to alienate readers, by all means carry on with these ideas.
It's one thing to have a sad ending where an older person takes on a young lover and has an unforgettable summer only to succumb to cancer the following fall. That's a sweet sort of sad.

But you are adding cruelty (as cruel as life can be) and that's not what readers want. Trust me on this. All of us have been through some trauma or another and it has helped shape who we are, for good or for ill. Reading is an escape from that.

Having said that, if none of that matters to you, then write it. As for the happy/sad alternative ending, I think that would be a good idea. Post them on the same day and then watch the results. An interesting experiment. Maybe it will prove me wrong. Who knows?

Don't expect a lot of readers to want that. I sure wouldn't read it. But, you already knew that. Write for your happiness, not theirs. It's not like they're paying you.

Yup, that’s why I posted this. I typically don’t get my story ideas here but it so controversial. I particularly follow your insights Rob, I think there very good and I think you are correct. I’m not scared of a bad rating, and as the next commentator noted - I do write what I want, but Rob, you hit the word perfectly that was in my sub consciousness - alienate. I would like people to enjoy my stories!

And for the record, I’m a total - albeit privledged- social justice weenie and like the ideas because Americans think this is the land of opportunity for all and live their happy endings. The situations I put forth, although extreme, are closer to. what marginalized individuals experience.

On the other hand, writers feel the need to add social commentary (Cucked), or add realism (Anderson). And rightly so.
A happy medium needs to be found by the writer. Don't be too tunnel-visioned that you forget that the purpose here is to entertain.

Or even have a well defined hellscape setting from the start, the aforementioned medieval or, say, modern full scale war, where completely random unexpected mortality is commonplace, as is extreme violence, physical, physiological, and sexual. At least the rules are clear.

And yet another is to lead through, build expectations and then destroy the main character. It's a trap, and it's meant to trigger a response with isn't delightful, to say it mildly. However, I don't agree that such stories shouldn't be written. They certainly have right to exist, goal and purpose.

There could be legitimate discussion, should those stories be published here. Yet, I think even that's reductionism. Where then? Places that would welcome those themes touched by the endings, might balk on the extreme sexual content. Others may have no much readership at all.

For someone who writes for activism or statements, but wants to explore or abuse sexual situations and wants eyeballs likely attracted by such content, this may be the place even if the likely result is to make those same readers unhappy. That's the purpose, the intended effect.

Nowhere it's said here should only ever been lighthearted entertainment and no honest thought provoking prose. Unless one generalize the, unclear and abhorrent, policies regulating the no-true-non-con ad absurdum.

So yes, I would say go for it. Expect low ratings and verbal abuse, most likely, but that's calculated collateral.

Perhaps... a more subtle way could be another kind of subversion. Telling the story from a pov of a triumphal baddie. But transparent enough most sane people would feel bad by the end anyway. But that may both alienate part of the readership one may most hope for from the get go, and then, would have to deal with salivating creeps unable to see even the clearest written subtext and apparently enjoying it at face value together with the intended baddie. That may end up to be harder to stomach than their tears.

This board provides incredible insight and analysis. I had to read this twice to fully understand as it is so complex and intelligent. So thought provoking. I’m probably going to avoid posting those stories here. I don’t mind bad ratings, but I don’t want to get abused, pummeled and alienate as Rob said. And maybe the stories are too cruel. Marginalized people get fucked everyday - yesterday the president just fucked over one of the most marginalized groups in America to bend over for the white liberal elite suburban votes my congresswoman in NJ and he needs, and probably wrote another check to finally wipe out people marginalized for the past 75 years. Maybe I’m doing the same thing? Because I want to make a statement, but I’m also getting hard while writing the sexual parts of the story!

I’m gonna continue to think on it. I have some more appropriate social commentary stories I’m working on without not happy endings but not so tragic. Marx-Leninist here. From a family of New England blueblood libs probably not unlike the characters in your story.

My own series is heavily drawn from my experiences working and teaching in economically-depressed communities throughout the hinterland, or the imperial periphery if you will. It could almost be seen as a dirge to the doom that came to rural/small town America in the age of late capitalism. Sort of like how Stephen King explored similar themes in the 70's and 80's when he killed off the small towns in Salem's Lot and The Tommyknockers.

Cedar Station had no cedars. Cedar Station had no station.

Honestly, it would have been too bleak for even me if I had set it in, say, the Deep South (like the other characters in your story) or Appalachia.

That said, I'm trying not to be too dogmatic or hidebound on the left-wing political angles. They're inescapably present, of course, as surely as the right-wing angles would be as inescapably present in a Tom Clancy or a David Drake novel. But I think it could be overlooked by someone who was otherwise interested in the writing.

Really, a lot of the themes that I explore would probably resonate just as easily with rightists.

Seriously, we need more bad endings. The series I'm working on right now, without spoilers certainly doesn't have a happy ending!
