Vacate Watch - Speaker Mike Johnson (R - LA)

I doubt that. She's on the other side of the political spectrum, disagreeing with me economically, on social issues and on religion, but we'd probably agree about the waste of US imperialism's warmongers and what charlatans they are when they try to justify their actions.
Of course 👍

From what I'm seeing they got a vague promise he won't shut down the government in September. I wouldn't trust him at all on that front so it sounds like the only thing we got is MTG looking stupid as possible but she would have done something else stupid in a week.

MTG had her sit-down meeting with Speaker Johnson yesterday to go over her four "non-negotiable demands" that were her "conditions" for rescinding her "motion to vacate".

Her demands included no further funding for Ukraine, no funding for any court accepting legal cases against Donald Trump, etc.

By all accounts, it was not a long meeting. As in: five minutes, tops.

Johnson's comment: "There were no negotiations to be had".
Greene's comment: (verbatim) "I'm so tired of words".

Marjorie Taylor Greene forced a floor vote to remove the Speaker today.

She was booed when she insisted on a formal recorded vote.

Her measure to remove Speaker Johnson was defeated 359 to 43.

An absolute trainwreck for the dimbulb House Freedumb Caucus.

I think we can safely say that the Republican tail no longer wags the dog.

Democrats kept their promise to Republicans and sided with Johnson.
It remains to be seen wheter Republicans keep their promise and not play games with up-or-down spending bills in September.

Seriously I've been googling and scanning through various news programs and have not seen anything that we really gained. Letting McCarthy go down could very easily have had a few more REpublicans step down just because they are tired of the BS like we've been watching happen. This seems like typical Democrat give them everything, take from them nothing.

“We.” 🤣 You don’t gain anything. The folks that you adore are not interested in governing. They only want to obstruct, since one Rep Venmo (Fl) hopes to still dissuade an investigation into his pay for underage play, as an example (what Kevin’s removal was all about)

Being a grown up brings responsibility. The MAGA group is far from grown up.

The first one of these was political theater to allow the country to see the depths the Republican’t party was willing to go to fully show the country they are nothing but spoiled brats throwing temper tantrums. This vote showed the remaining grown ups that are there to govern told the 11 cry babies the STFU.

It is NOT a zero sum game, our government is built on compromise. So you didn’t get your way, go pout in the corner and the plot to overthrow the government again like you did on Jan 6. (Yup all comes back to that… show me where another group of people stormed the Capitol, destroyed property, all to interrupt a proceeding designed to confirm you lost)

It’s really tough when you are constantly lied to, and you believe all of the lies. But folks like Wrongguide @Rightguide eat it up. You can’t get enough of the biased gossip since to you it is a zero sum game.

The majority of sane voters in the country have seen what the MAGA crowd has to offer, and if you think they are going to buy it…well you will find a similar result as Moscow Margie found yesterday. Maybe she can get the Congress to vote down her space lasers bill next?

We got our aid bills through and signed for Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel. We likely have a backroom agreement for compromise assistance for future bills important to the Democratic party.

We did not get that from McCarthy, and so we didn't save him from his party. In addition, because of that and 45, many Republicans have left the party with a slim majority, giving Democrats even more power at the negotiating table.

And you know house Dems are keeping in mind that Johnson is a seminal election denier and Uber conservative in their negotiations with him

hi :)

apart from the benefits ll74 has pointed out, i think it's also a case of making sure Congress remains working for the people rather than dissolve into weeks, if not months, of chaos where other really important work simply could never even get brought to the floor.

in November, hopefully people will remember that the democrats opted to do the adult thing and were capable of working 'across the aisle' in order to get vital funding through—something the republicans on their own wouldn't have managed because republicans are chaotic and the House would have been thrown into outright madness if another Speaker had to be found.

i don't think democrats trust either this speaker or fellow house republicans to continue to work with them, and they recall his personal stance on all manner of weirdnesses, but hope that november will see a shift in the power balance in the House whereupon the dems will name a new speaker.

Okay. DKovic, you're not new here. I'm not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination so. . .yeah I don't even really know what you're on about. The one point you make that at least kind of applies is that our government runs on compromise. Except it doesn't. The way our government is set up the minority party has zero reasons to compromise. They can hold their breath until they pass out. When they hit their heads and scream that the majority bullied them people buy it. We've seen this pattern since Obama at least.

I have a hard time believing the Ukraine funding was ever in any real risk of being cancelled. Nobody seems to care enough about Taiwan to push or block funding there at all. I'm against funding Israel but I accept that things happen the way they happen and there is nothing to be done for it. Sometimes life sucks and you simply have to deal with it.

I'm not sure why it would be a bad thing at this point to let the government descend into chaos while the Dems spend a few weeks doing each and every news show. Not just MSM, go on those little punk shows on Youtube that are run by three guys out of a living room. The one where the cat keeps jumping up on the book case and staring at the camera like something out of a horror flick. Get the message out. How long are we going to just let the Right hold the country hostage whenever they don't get there way.

If Congress was working on a third speaker in what? Not even a full year how many more REpublicans would just peace out? Sounds like a logical way to get a Dem majority.

The way our government works NOW has not been compromise. Historically, that is not the case and in a functioning government, compromise is the key to enacting meaningful legislation.

People who think holding the majority is the only way to get things done and that the minority has no role, are part of the issue. We should always be pushing for compromise for the American people.

In the realm of politics, there are individuals who hold fast to principles that, while noble in belief, may grossly insult the prevailing political landscape. The dichotomy between principle and pragmatism where the balance between holding firm to one’s beliefs and the realities of governance can be a delicate one, but in this case MTG stepped out on a cobweb instead of a tightrope. In her mind her stand was principled in my mind it was foolish and destructive.

When the Democrats were in charge there was zero compromise. What we see today in the House are the fruits of the labor of Nancy Pelosi.

Yes, I get that you blame the Democrats for everything.

There are multiple factors for why compromise is no longer common within Congress. Those factors are not entirely due to one party or the other. Both parties have contributed to the problem.

Zero compromise? Did you completely forget how much the Republicans were given on the ACA?

I honestly don't believe the founders intended a functioning government as think of it today. They wanted what we have today. There are things where compromise can and should be a thing. I'm utterly unconvinced that we have any issues right now where that is a realistic option. We have a party that claims to love the troops. Anything that would help them however will be blocked by them. They have the money to put guns in our hands but not to take care of us if we come back broken. There is no compromise there.

I don't think that holding the majority is the only way to get things done. I know the only way to get things done is to get a super majority and everybody walking in lockstep. Anything shy of that and you will accomplish fuck all. It sucks but there it is. The minority party has no real reason to compromise. When they sabotage the system and then scream the system doesn't work the public gobbles it up.

Yes, cynicism is the norm. I get it.

Ive lived through functioning and compromising government. That is what this was.

Sorry you are too cynical to understand that and likely too cynical to pursue it from your representatives.

I was honestly hopeful until the Obama era showed just how naive I was to think everybody wanted the same basic things. A good life for their friends and family. A strong country with good relationships. The concept that people were capable of hating others more than loving their own was a foreign concept to me.

What's worse is I blame the Left for most of this. We compromised on things we shouldn't have.

How are those Trump trials going based on the "facts" you believed in?

The one is going great! He’s clearly done it. As soon as we can dispense with that one, we can get the next one scheduled.

His, “whoa is me I have to many trials” play to string it out hoping to win and then be able to dismiss everything isn’t as easy as he thought.

He will get his many days in court. Thanks for asking.
