Anyone from the UK?

Good morning UKers.

I met Liz Truss once at a business function. She's actually, believe it or not, very pleasant in person.

But batshit crazy as far as politics are concerned.

…Villains who twirl their moustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well camouflaged….
…but she, or someone like her, will always be with us, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish, spreading fear in the name of righteousness. Vigilance…that is the price we have to continually pay.

Shhhhhhh, i'm trying to work
SORRY!

A little bit of a rant here, please bear with me!

Just listening to the radio news as I avoid working and I'm listening to the FOREST spokesman whining about the potential smoking ban.
I'm pro-choice myself, and if people want to smoke - as I did for a long time - then they should be allowed to harm themselves. That's fine, do what you want. I'm against the ban.
But to claim that this is a law against pleasure and that smokers gain huge pleasure from smoking just made me laugh.

I did it for more than 20 years, stopping in 2008, and if any smoker stops and thinks about whether they actually enjoy it, properly think about it - the answer will be no. Maybe they enjoy a few, like the first of the day - the one after being in a meeting for hours... but even that isn't enjoyment, it's simply the easing of the withdrawal symptoms! I challenge anyone to think about it properly and state honestly that they enjoy the taste of tobacco. People smoke because they need to, as I did and as I still feel like doing from time to time, even 16 years later, because it is a very real addiction.
Smoking does not relax you and make you feel good, its that not smoking puts you on edge. Nicotine is a stimulant, but does ease the withdrawal symptoms which makes you feel "normal" and therefore relaxed. You never needed nicotine to relax until you used it. A non-smoker doesn't need it to relax.

Two things I read somewhere when I was reading about tobacco and its effects before I quit for the last time were....

A smoker has two options - you either quit or you smoke until you die.
And...
If you want to quit, you just have to choose to do nothing in response to the urge to smoke. Do nothing, it passes.

But they should not ban it - if people want to take a 2 in 3 risk of death from their "enjoyment", then let them.

I was a long time smoker too, till a few years ago when I succumbed to peer pressure (partner pressure!) and took up vaping instead. It works for me in ways smoking fags didn't: I can take a couple of quick puffs without wasting five minutes finishing a cig; it doesn't make my clothes, the car or house smell of smoke, and I quite like the flavour of the liquorice juice I use; it's a lot cheaper; because it's a habit my manager shares we can even puff in the office 🙂. And I still get the habit and craving fulfilled. Never had much luck with patches or non-inhalatory remedies because I guess my habit was very strongly formed and I'd always backslide, but my trusty tank has kept me off the cigs for ten years now. I use a proper refillable battery and separate tank unit, couldn't live with disposables and the criminal level of waste.

I think it does make sense to try to impose a ban in the phased way it's being attempted rather than just a guillotine ban, and it's one of the few areas of policy where I can detect a modicum of competence and forethought in the current Tory shower.

Personally, I'm not a fan of vaping - I hate the sweet smell and clouds of vape.
I'm also very aware that the long-term effects of using even the more carefully produced products are largely unknown, and the less carefully produced ones are downright dangerous. It appears, from reading I've done, that the damage is more limited - to the lungs rather than the whole body - but they're still harmful.

I'm not even convinced whether vaping is "better" than smoking as far as health is concerned. We'll find out in time.

Good afternoon all, I think they should ban cherry cola Tic Tacs. They're far too more-ish. I've just consumed half a pack and had to hide the rest away from myself.

That sounds delightful! Where on earth did you find those? I have only been able to find the “vanilla” (read: Mint) tic-tacs round my area.

I didn't know you liked them...

They're in my local co-op, I can highly recommend them
One up the road from me, fantastic. Thanks Kat, great shout! I am trying to replace one vice (McVities Chocolate Digestives) with something smaller  and hopefully less damaging!

Oh god, chocolate digestives are dangerous. As are Cadbury's Chocolate Fingers! Apparently peppermint is supposed to be good at preventing mindless snacking. But I also like snacking on mints so.....

Those and I used to love the cinnamon ones! Probably shows my age lol
I love cinnamon! Was it cinnamon gum you used to be able to get?

I had a full pack of Chocolate Hobnobs in the house yesterday.

Had.
