It's a True Lovers' Knot. A sailor would give it loosely tied to his lady love. If she gave it back the same way, it meant "maybe". If she gave it back untied it meant "Shove off". If she gave it back tied tight, it meant "Call the Captain. There's going to be a wedding aboard the ship." (As per the Ashley Book of Knots).
