Actually, considering all the great things that the former Soviet Union built using gulag prisoners, I may be becoming a fan. We have decaying infrastructure which needs attention, and what better way to get shit done? Create some political crimes, assign long sentences for conviction of them, pack them off to gulags, and put their sorry asses to work.

I know that the Soviets had the concept of what they called Shock Workers. These were those who worked exceptionally and they were rewarded with better barracks and more food. And there were the Gen Z precursors - shocking how badly they worked - and their reward was less food. So Big Brother was certainly watching.


I wonder how some of our Shock Posters would do in the system. My favorites were the Ukrainian partisans who, when shipped there after the war, said that it wasn't cold enough and did the Soviet have something north of the Arctic Circle? Ya gotta admire the huevos on those guys. Our "shock" posters, not so much.


Think about it: the Moscow subway system was hand dug.
