Europe stumbled into WWI. They expected a short, limited conflict like the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, but technological advances had changed the nature of battle. Most of the powers thought they could gain a little advantage over their rivals if they went to war, so they jumped on a minor terrorist attack in the Balkans as a convenient pretext to declare war. The result was a huge bloodbath.

WWII was caused by the Nazis. Hitler wanted to grab land to the east to build a greater German empire. Stalin let him on the condition that the Soviet Union could take a chunk of Eastern Europe for themselves but that was merely a trick to set Russia up for a German invasion. Fascist Italy had imperial ambitions as well, but they were minor compared to Hitler's grand plan.

The war in the Pacific is more complicated. Japan was militaristic, but not fascist. They hoped to take advantage of the chaos in Europe to replace the colonial powers with a pan-Asian Union. They knew they couldn't win a long war against the U.S., but gambled that America didn't have the will to fight, and would back down after being defeated at Pearl Harbor. They lost that gamble.
