This is off their first album, Static Age, which was recorded in '78, but due to a bunch of record label hopscotch and subterfuge, didn't get released in it's entirety until '96. Songs got released here and there, but a lot of it was played live, so I'm running with it as belonging in the 70's.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

I love Queen, but Bohemian Rhapsody has always been lower on my favorites list. I like it, but there are so many I like more, and it is so...ubiquitous, I just tired of it.

But having seen them live, I love that when playing the operetta in the middle, the whole band leaves the stage while they play the tape while continuing the light show. Their thought was "if you couldn't do it live, don't pretend you can." With the number of bands using backing tracks while on stage, it makes me love them even more.

My favorite song of all time.

To my ears, this is probably the best song ever written (although I’d say Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is a contender, if the original performance wasn’t so terrible). I listened to an interview with him and he said he has little recollection of writing this song. Imagine writing such a brilliant masterpiece and not actually remembering it.

This is also one of the first songs I ever learned on acoustic guitar. I remember being about 13 and playing it over and over to get better.

There are few songs I consider “perfect”, but this is one. Everything from the musical arrangement, application of theory, instrumentation, lyrics, production… it’s perfection.
