The Silent Comments

I hope people are favoriting my stories to read again later. Of course, given that some people have thousands of favorites, I really can’t say.
That's what I do. I have a grand total five stories favorited. And I have re-read at least a couple of them some time later.

Same here.

You or anyone else ever want to favorite mine, feel free. Link in sig.
I'll check, but no promises. There are some really, really good stories that I don't think I'd want to read again later. It's not just a question of liking it a lot, it has to have something that feels meaningful enough and resonates enough to make me think I'd like to come back to it.

There is one writer in this thread that appears on that shortlist.

EDIT: Oh, man, I really dislike like Celeb/Fanfic.

What would be the point of a no-negatives format?

To deny power to anti-kink trolls. If you’d ever written a story they didn’t like, you might not have to ask.

Btw, I define a “no negatives” voting format as one where readers can only give thumbs up or comment and negative comments can be deleted by the story author easily.

So, you'd only get positive feedback? How would you guess-timate if a story was well-received by the audience?

I don't bookmark or follow but I should probably leave more comments. I didn't know til fairly recently how much authors appreciate them. I've read lots of books where it never would have occurred to me to try to communicate with the authors, and in general, I think that would have just been annoying to them. I had figured online fiction was about the same way, but it really isn't.

Just because the comments get deleted doesn’t mean they don’t get read and judged for their positives vs negatives. If a reader makes a constructive criticism, I consider their advice. My issues lie with guess-timating audience reception inaccurately or on merits where we disagree. I am also of the opinion where if you can’t say something kind, saying nothing is polite. And I will never define certain comments as kind. Go check various Loving Wives stories for examples.

You also never know why someone makes a downvote. Maybe they liked the sex but not the plot. Or vice versa. Maybe they hate one character but like another. Or length, kink depiction, plot resolution, you name it. There are people who have shamed my stories because I insisted on not leaving a kidnapped character in sexual slavery. I kid you not. I’d rather people give high votes without explanation than nonspecific low votes. I have depression issues and want to keep writing. Hope you understand.

Thanks - I'll have to think about it for a while. I don't get many negative comments, and the one's I've gotten have had some value as a writer. Same with low ratings - I look back at my lower rated stories and I can see why they got low ratings.

You’d need to define some norm on it then. A bit like Quantum Mechanics.

I'm not entirely sold... many people seem to feel that certain users are already seeking superposition for their votes from alternate universes/variants.

A comment like “Why no ratings? Are you chicken?” is not positive. The commentator probably hasn’t ever seen chickens fight either. I have- you do NOT want to piss one off.

Thumbs-up only voting just increases the problem of popularity over anything else skewing the ratings. It's a raw number and the most wins. Get some ( alleged ) woman sending out nudie pics with every click of the like button, and they become the #1 author by orders of magnitude practically overnight. They could be posting complete word salad and still dominate everything.

The change from ranged voting to thumbs-up only is the one positive part of it — assuming they convert all existing votes to likes. That means all those 1s instantly become positives and the screeches of horrified rage from the trolls is oh-so satisfying for about five minutes.

That’s another problem. Once you make a rating, you can’t take it back. What if you owe one or five by mistake?

Assuming you're logged in and using the new story pages, you can change your vote at any time now. ( Which throws yet another unknowable variable into trying to break down your score )

Yeah, I bookmark to put into a to do list, then often unbookmark when read. The only ones left afterwards are the stories that have new plot bunnies attached. It's more a workspace for me than a collection.

Vast swathes of Literotica rely on Schrodinger’s Consent to function.

I love it when the apparently random Follow, Favorite, or comment appears. My top-rated Christmas story received a very complimentary but completely unexpected comment (the 9th) yesterday that might be attributed to someone checking the top list in its category (between 200 and 250 the last time I checked), but two others have received a favorite that might be due to checking them out from my current story, from a tag cross reference, being on an old event list, or possibly from the Random Stories list in a particular category. Personally, I really don't care how they found the story they like but just hope they'll consider checking out another one and, hopefully, liking it too.

It’s just as likely passing extraterrestrials. We have no way of knowing.
