Mom's family made sure to tell the next generations where they came from: One from Russia, the other from Austria-Hungary. BOTH families spoke German, paternal spoke Russian as well. Grandpa was a cook in the WWII Army, but was a translator from D-Day on. Was at the Battle of the Bulge, was a translator at Nuremburg.As someone who's family is also from the mishmash between Berlin and Moscow (can't really tell you where), that's an interesting path.

Mohawks, we were taught a shit ton of stuff: the legends, the actual history (Grandma was taken to an Indian Residential School, escaped, and the state of NY did not help them take her back LOL), had some Civil War and WWI veterans.
