As someone who's family is also from the mishmash between Berlin and Moscow (can't really tell you where), that's an interesting path.

I am completely fascinated by how much of the culture we lost when most of the natives were killed

Mom's family made sure to tell the next generations where they came from: One from Russia, the other from Austria-Hungary. BOTH families spoke German, paternal spoke Russian as well. Grandpa was a cook in the WWII Army, but was a translator from D-Day on. Was at the Battle of the Bulge, was a translator at Nuremburg.

Mohawks, we were taught a shit ton of stuff: the legends, the actual history (Grandma was taken to an Indian Residential School, escaped, and the state of NY did not help them take her back LOL), had some Civil War and WWI veterans.

I think very differently about this, my body is like many others in a world of 8+ billion and it will come in different colours too. It's my mind that is totally unique and that I don't give away freely, sounds a bit arrogant or conceited I don't mean it to be it's just my thoughts on it.
