Oh my, those individual citizens owned firearms if I remember correctly.I like the notion that the D of I means something. IIRC, Scalia observed that it had no bearing, but then it would have gone against his pro-death-penalty stance. Simple observation notes a Right to Life spelled out quite clearly from the same basic batch of folks who would congregate a decade later to craft the Constitution. Therefore, I'm inclined to conclude that we have the basis of their thinking and therefore we can draw a few conclusions as to their feelings on the origin of rights.
George III certainly had an opinion as to the legality of the D of I, and we're not usually in agreement with him.
By the by, he sent an army. We didn't ask them nice to bugger off from whence they came. We shot them. With our firearms . . . .

Collectively became a regulated militia, but if I’m not mistaken they possessed firearms first for hunting and self protection.
Isn’t that the same issue we’re dealing with today?
Which shooting was that?
I'm kinda thinking about one of those.
The AR-10.
Another one. The flattop.
Kinda . . . .
You have my sympathies. Please don't show pics of your ARs, I don't want to throw up or cry.I'd love to have a Barrett but 2 things stand in the way;
1. Can't have here in California;
2. My spine won't take the recoil without all the Jenga blocks coming apart.

All my guns were lost in an unfortunate boating accident while crossing Lake Los Angeles toward my favorite duck hunting blind.
You know how it is; early morning, half asleep lookout on watch, a hidden iceberg... it was a tragedy.
That's just heartbreaking. A work friend had this self-same accident occur with his entire collection, lock, stock and barrel. Light watergoing craft seem to be overwhelmed by firearms collections and invite disaster. We all feel your pain intensely. And if your case is anything like his, the swift currents made the dive team search impossible.
It's not just the hidden and unpredictable currents, the depth approaches that of the Marianas Trench.
GPS says it happened right here:

No hope of recovery. I was inconsolable for months.
So what is the oldest gun in your collection? I have a stevens crack shot (I think) from 1908
I’ve mentioned on many occasions that the constitution was designed by our forefathers to define and limit the role of the government and to protect us from said government. The enumerated rights of the government clearly explained by the constitution but somehow has illegally expanded way past its intended role. We as citizens have slowly surrendered our rights and allowed government to swell its bureaucratic body and power beyond recognition. Sad.Every single firearm since the Matchlock rifle has been a weapon of war at its inception. The Second Amendment wasn't added for hunting or self defense. It was written and added to ensure the American PEOPLE could effectively fight back against a tyrannical gov't like we fought for our independence. It was written and added to ensure the American PEOPLE could never again be enslaved by the Government.
There is not one amendment or even an article of the constitution that is written for ANY purpose but to LIMIT the power of the government.
2nd Amendment (as defined by the common usage of terms at the time it was written) :
A well regulated (prepared and equipped) militia (a body of non-military civilians ready to come to the defense of their country at the behest of Congress) being necessary for the security of a free state, (a condition of liberty, not referencing Ohio, California, Texas, New York, et. al.) the right of the PEOPLE (every law abiding citizen of the United States of America) to keep and bear arms (weapons and armor of ANY type) shall not be infringed. (limited, restricted or subverted)
The 2nd Amendment does not GRANT the people the right to bear arms, that right was determined to be a basic human right. It was written and added to DENY the government the authority to interfere with that right.
The entire Constitution of The United States of America is written to define and LIMIT the power of the government, NOT the PEOPLE.
Inalienable rights are granted to all people from a much higher power than big government. Many within our government believe they are above that power, are doing us a favor, actually believe they permit those rights to exist and also believe they can eliminate if so desired. Marxist believe that load of crap.At one time this was even understood by the Supreme Court. In United States v. Cruikshank (1876), the first case in which the Court had an opportunity to interpret the Second Amendment, it stated that the right confirmed by the Second Amendment "is not a right granted by the constitution. Neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence." The repeal of the Second Amendment would no more render the outlawing of firearms legitimate than the repeal of the due process clause of the Fifth Amendment would authorize the government to imprison and kill people at will. A government that abrogates any of the Bill of Rights, with or without majoritarian approval, forever acts illegitimately, becomes tyrannical, and loses the moral right to govern.
Butbutbutbut . . . reasonable!!!

Man's Existence got interesting (in the Chinese curse way) when he decided that Elah had taken the afternoon off and left him in charge.
