He was referred for observation by the Army and was committed to a mental hospital/ward.

At that point in time his name should have been entered into the NICS database and any match should have generated a warrant to search and seize his guns.

Those are the laws which already exist and which DO NOT WORK despite the Left constantly trying to impose them all over again while saying that's what we need to stop mass shootings.

Fact: The laws already exist.
Fact: The laws do not work.

Anyone saying that we need more laws needs to understand that if the laws we have don't work, adding more laws will not change anything. It's not the law, it's the incompetent people charged with enforcing the law.

This brings up a question. IIRC, part of the salesmanship (and it's nothing less) of getting Brady through was that the FBI would destroy all records of background checks. Of course, Sentient Life never believed that that was gonna happen, but I think it was part of the package. If they're actually doing away with the background check information, then there's nothing to cross reference in the case of a visit/stay/confinement to the nut ward. It would then depend on someone in authority asking the patient and getting a truthful answer.

2. Digitizing the 4473's of those dealers that have gone out of business.

Does anyone else notice how gun laws are only a priority of the American Left in the aftermath of an egregious shooting? It sounds a bit opportunist to me because, I know from one experience with the issues now, once the cameras and pop-culture reporters go away and the metaphorical bleeding stops, the issue falls way back down in the political issues hierarchy of what’s important in the Left’s drive to eradicate inequality as well as the individual. If falls down there below border control (which encompasses arms, drug and human smuggling, top election issues, but outside of that window, too toxic to touch: it’s Hammer time! You can’t touch this!)

You say you want want “common-sense gun laws” whether it’s (just like the abortion issue) from, "We just need a few more laws (boil the frog slowly)," to an outright firearms ban (let the Hammer drop!)? Then stop making it an issue of opportunity and make it a real, top priority in the social justice hierarchy of needs. Make you politicians know that they have to run on this issue, not just give it lip service from one unfortunate event to another. Threaten to support the gun guy with your contributions and votes; at least they’re being honest and dedicated to their values!

Exactly. If it were so fucking important (guns bans), it would already be law. And the "black rifle" ban sunsetted nearly 20 years ago.


Wat's Theory: if it "should" be illegal and isn't, then that's because the Right People are getting paid. If it is illegal and it still goes on anyway, then a lotta the Right People are getting paid - a lot.

Maine doesn’t have a red flag law. The state legislature should and probably will pass one quickly.

media clearly stated that Card should have had his guns confiscated under current laws in that state. That never happened.

The real travesty was the bar owner who did NOT have a gun, and tried to defend his patrons using a knife. He lost his life as a hero, but still lost his life. Too bad he did not have a firearm with him for better defense.

As sad as all this is, it shows that laws do not work, and that we really need more good people with guns on them. Had the bar owner been able to take out Card, lives would not have been lost at the Bowling Alley.

Laws and regulations are feel-good measures that are always reactive and, by their very nature, cannot be proactive because no-one can foresee what "might" happen.

Every time there is a disaster or tragedy, the political thing is to call for laws and regulations, not one of which has a philosophical tinker's chance of abrogating basic human nature and brazing us together as one.

Once again, this would actually make the situation WORSE instead of better.

Why?

People who value their 2A Rights would not want anything to hamper buying weapons now or in the future, so instead of getting mental health help when they are going through a troubling time in their life, they would go without. This would make way for more unstable people in the population.

Most people go through some very tragic things in their life, and need, or could use, mental health treatments. To discourage that would do more harm than good, especially since 400 million guns are already in this country. You don' have to go far to find one... or steal one.

The laws in place do not work, so adding in more road blocks to mental stability makes no sense at all.
