Vacate Watch - Speaker Mike Johnson (R - LA)

As soon as he was announced as the candidate he got inundated with "non negotiable demands" from the Gaetz-MTG bombthrower faction, just like Kevin McCarthy did.

Unlike McCarthy, though, Emmer said "fuck it, this is not worth it" and bailed.

I actually admire the guy for that.

Greene and Gaetz and fellow travellers still think they control the agenda. Mayhaps they do.
Time to jettison them. Should have happened earlier. But it seems the Republicans have all been castrated.

Here's a strategery. Hakeem Jeffries will arrange for a block of 20 Democrats to vote for a REPUBLICAN house speaker. In exchange, the new speaker will remove Greene, Gaetz and Santos from ALL House committees they are on, and agree to have Republicans vote for clean debt limit bills for the remainder of the term.

This would take a significant amount of drama out of the House.

One of the powers Dems want in exchange for their support is to be able to table minority agenda. Why not? A majority vote is still required pass any legislation.

I think the above is more plausible, and palatable for both sides.

Welp....fuggedaboutit. Mike Johnson of Louisiana is Next Man Up for House Speaker. Former hate radio talk show host, proposed legislation to allow state legislatures to send their own slate of electors for president regardless of the popular vote.

This guy is a cancer on the human race, not just the Republican party.

Why should they? If Democrats want to cooperate...have them help elect McCarthy. In no way should Jeffries ever carry the gavel. He is part of why we are here

Why should any democrat vote for any republican? Especially one who rebuffs all efforts of bipartisanship.

The republicans have repeatedly demonstrated that there are no rewards for giving into their temper tantrums.

If the GOP drag us through all this drama and instability just to go back to McCarthy they are a joke. A bad one.

Well, Emmer‘s the deal. Now that Emmer chatted with Trump can he expect support from democrats?

Maybe if a hundred or so Dems vote present we can get back to regular order.
Wow, want someone else to fix the shit problem you created? You want Dems help? They helped Kevin and you sacked him.

STFU!

You have some serious mental issues, you need help! You convinced me that you’re not ODing on stupid pills you’re really just that stupid. Get a life already.
Actually, Fuzzy just cleaned your clock.

I can't see any way Democrats would support him.

Well, this is a refreshing and different way of taking the bull by the horns and foraging ahead with a positive direction in mind! A call for bipartisanship at last! Way to go, Keith. I'll make sure to sign on to this approach.

Now, you realize that brave Republican has to 'want to live in Hell' for the rest of his/her political life. As such, the selectee should be someone planning on retiring soon and moving out of his/her home state immediately afterward.

Leadership Potentials?
  • Kevin McCarthy. Speaker of the House.
  • Steve Scalise. Majority Leader.
  • Tom Emmer. Majority Whip.
  • Elise Stefanik. House Republican Conference Chair.
  • Gary Palmer. Republican Policy Chair.
  • Mike Johnson. House Republican Conference Vice-Chair.
  • Lisa McClain. House Republican Conference Secretary.
  • Guy Reschenthaler. Deputy Whip.
I honestly thought Stefanik was aiming for leadership and even Presidential ambitions. Her lack of motivation after McCain dropped off was surprising to me.

The Dems could find a half dozen disgusted Republicans who are to the point of just retiring and use their and Dem votes to vote in Lynn Cheney.

OK, House Dems: Pick some moderate Republican who can be flexible and who can get at least 50 Republican votes and vote him in yourselves. Let's get this wagon moving. The Republicans will forever be embarrassed, and the point will be made to the electorate.
that's what i posted regarding emmer, more or less, but the pubs way forward was to select a nominee and then hold a private behind-doors internal vote to see if he could get the 217 required to save further embarrassment on the house floor in the full vote. The arguments were ongoing when Emmer left the building in disgust.

The most Jesus-Freakiest congressman today is Georgia's Bill Adams. He's convinced MTG that any incoming House Speaker must commit to a floor vote to repeal Gay Marriage. MTG agreed. And he's not even in the Freedom caucus....he is in Congress for exactly one reason....to fight homos.

I wouldn't count on that...that is exactly what the far Right wants...total destruction of what is.
For once, you're right.
So that means one side has to cross to the other and offer help...personally I think Jeffries has to go to McCarthy...and see if any relationship is repairable...but they would have to offer a clean slate (no demands) and give on something big (discretionary budget cuts).
Ah yes, the ever-popular My Fair Lady strategy, or "Why can't a Democrat be more like a Republican?" We are not responsible for Kevin McCarthy's refusal to give an inch on anything, or for his decision to enable a single gadfly like Gaetz to bring him down. That, not the Democrats, is what caused this mess. And that's what the Republicans have to address. But as even you said, they don't want to.
I think the Democrats ruined that possibility by voting as they did.
Yes, showing some backbone for once was just plain unforgivable, wasn't it?
Just as people don't see Trump as the problem...they will see this as caused by the Democrats.
People who "will see this as caused by the Democrats" were already going to vote Republican anyway. There is no point in trying to appease them.
This is the reality. Most Democrats have no clue what most people want.
What basis do you have for that, beyond your extremely weird inclination to blame the minority party for being unwilling to bail out people who hate them?

I talk with people. Try it. There are also great sites out there you can monitor the latest polls and evaluate their accuracy.

Here is the fact people like you refuse to accept:
Eight Republicans voted to remove McCarthy without a plan...without a care of what if. ALL THE DEMOCRATS voted with the eight traitors. All of them. What was our plan? To watch them squirm...and say look...we aren't them. We put our country in peril. End of story. If we default...that's on us...just as much as the eight traitors

No, you insufferable dunce, “ALL THE DEMOCRATS” did NOT “vote with the eight traitors”.

🙄

The Democrats voted FOR THEIR NOMINEE as they always have and always should.

👍

This current clusterfuck is ALL on the Gross Old Party.

👎

Side note:

Only an imbecile bases their opinion and compromises their values / positions due to the results of the latest polls.

Polls vary.

Hope that ^ helps.

The only difference now versus before McCarthy exited as Speaker is that America saw how disfunctional the GOP in the House is

And when it comes down to critical events in the world that the US needs to address, the GOP is paralyzed by it's own squabbling.

No matter who makes it through, that is the same story and the best possible outcome for taking the House back next year.

"If we default" is stupid. We won't.

To sum up what has happened so far with GOP "control" of the House in the current session, any Republican Speaker or Speaker nominee who does not agree with the MAGAts will be removed. The only acceptable nominee to the MAGAts will be someone who voted to overturn the election of Joe Biden.

According to Republicans and our local appease-the-terrorists guy (Dribble), Democrats are expected to vote for a Republican Speaker nominee who is not a MAGAt, so that the MAGAts can then remove that person from the Speaker position when that Speaker crosses the MAGAts. However, no Republican Speaker nominee (that's zero) has reached out to the Democrats to try to develop a coalition that would change House rules so that the MAGAts don't get to call all the shots.

Conclusion: The Republicans depend on insurrectionists for their voter base, so they won't stand up to insurrection and form a coalition with the Democrats.

Go Fani Willis.

I've taken some liberty and corrected your post - to reflect a truer picture. The last paragraph needs some correction. The first paragraph is okay - it is your opinion after all, and you are entitled to it. However the last has no way of being substantiated. You attempt to speak for people other than yourself whom you do not know.
