I think these words from him say everything we need to know about why he's making such stands and when:

Based on conversations I've had, it seemed like not everyone really knew who Jim Jordan was before this - and how much of an egotistical sleaze he is. Or the level of caustic prick he is. They sure do now; he's showing the world.
