On Friday, the ninth day of Veltman’s Superior Court trial, the jury heard about his unusual behaviour in the parking lot of a London shopping mall while being arrested.
Veltman, a college dropout who worked at a Strathroy-area egg processing plant, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder for running his pickup truck into a Pakistani-Muslim family walking in northwest London on June 6, 2021.
Killed were Talat Afzaal, 72, her son Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, and their daughter, Yumnah, 15. Their son, who was nine years old, was seriously injured, but survived.
The prosecution is aiming to prove the killings were planned and deliberate and were an act of terrorism. It’s the first time Canada’s terrorism laws are being argued in front of a jury at a first-degree murder trial.
The jury has already seen videos of Veltman’s post-arrest statements, in which he told an officer he wanted to “send a message” and that his express goal was “to kill Muslims.”

The evidence on Friday focused on Veltman’s arrest, just minutes after the Afzaal family had been struck. The jury has heard Veltman, now 22, pulled into the Cherryhill Village Mall parking lot on Oxford Street and told a cab driver to call police.
