Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

Wow… youTube just flashed this on me…

After having all my music on albums… then on 8 Track for a while… then on cassettes.. this was one of the first CDs I bought when it came out (Smithereens 11). I am sure I still have it, but haven’t heart this in years.

The Smithereens - A Girl Like You

Anyone into Cream might enjoy this full concert... their swansong. Sadly Jack and Ginger no longer with us. Such great musicianship from all three. Each masters of their instrument/genre...

I didn’t consider myself a “punk” fan, at all. In fact, as I listened to “Eat To The Beat” today, I was struck by how kuch disco influence they clearly had. I still have that on vinyl from when it first came out. I loved that album! Listening to it again today (from my CD), was wonderful!

Strangely, I read somewhere relatively recently, that the producer was quite unhappy in the studio… with the DRUMMING! What?? I do not like busy drummers! I started playing drums at 10… I pay attention… I loved his drumming, even though it was a bit busy, because it was very intentional and sounded precise (to me).

I finally accepted that I am not a good drummer, and abandoned that… but still play bass (main instrument), guitar a very close second, and Hammond Organ (a distant third, but I LOVE Hammond tone-wheel organs!
Interesting coincidence. I was a drummer too, back in the 70s,/early 80s. Gave up, like you , when I came to same realisation. Experimented with e-drums later but the feel is not the same. Agree about "less is more". Ever listened to Simon Kirk in early Free days? So minimalist but so powerful. Once saw them live and power failed, so Simon just kept the Mr Big beat going until it came back 10 minutes later, Quite something!

One of the best live performances I've seen from Jeff Beck (rip). Live at Ronnie Scotts club in London with amazing band and guests. All other tracks are linked on right hand side.
The guitarist's guitarist....
I have seen performance… with Tal Wilkenfeld on bass. Amazing!!! 🥰🥰🥰

THE RUNAWAYS - Wasted (1977 UK TV Appearance) ~ HIGH QUALITY HQ ~

I was watching this on a tv special and they didn't sound bad, but I wouldn't pay money for them.

Glen Campbell - Highwayman

A Jimmy Webb song, best known for the version recorded by The Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson), but recorded several years earlier by Campbell, and became the title track of the album it was included on. One bit of trivia about the album that @BrendaD may appreciate according to one site I read:

A single version was recorded by Glen Campbell the following year as "Highwayman" and released on the Capitol label in 1979; this one runs 3:05. Campbell also named the album Highwayman, and it was this album where things got tense between artist and label; Columbia wanted Campbell to cover the song "My Sharona," and he refused. (emphasis mine)

I'm not sure how much truth there is in this, since as it states the album was released on Capital Records, not Columbia, so unless it was a misstatement (could be since The Knack were also on Capital), take it with a grain of salt. Makes for interesting reading, and one of those things that make you go "Hmmmmm..."

Sweet Judy Blue Eyes ~ CSN
Sometimes it hurts so badly that I must cry out loud...
Don't let the past, remind us of what we are not now...

Tearing yourself away from me now you are free
And I am crying
This does not mean I don't love you
I do, that's forever
Yes and for always

Can I tell it like it is? (Help me, I'm sufferin')
And listen to me baby
It's my heart that's a-sufferin', it's a-dyin' (Help me, I'm dyin')
And that's what I have to lose (To lose)
