Kentucky law requires the governor to appoint a senator from the same party as the one being replaced. So it'll be a Republican no matter what.

Old senators usually need to be carried out of the chamber in a pine box. Mitch is unlikely to leave before his term runs out unless he dies or becomes bedridden but his tenure as GOP Senate leader is coming to an end. Expect the calls for him to step down will get louder in the weeks and months ahead. My guess is a bit of an intra-party war between hard right and center right, ending with John Thune as his successor.
