Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

Dickey Betts and Great Southern - Southbound

This is from an episode of The Midnight Special in 1978. The video quality isn't the best as it looks like it was recorded off of television onto VHS; the tracking goes off a few times, but the audio is pretty good. Still, it doesn't take away from the music. In addition to Betts and his band, you have along for the ride Charlie Daniels, Elvin Bishop, and Bonnie Bramlett, and they just tear things up.

Dickey Betts wrote the song but I believe it was first released by the Allman Brothers in 1973

What do we think of the twang style guitar picking? I hear it in a lot of Pretenders tunes and Tom Petty's 'Here Comes My Girl'.

Many years ago, my brother and I played in a band together. One day we both brought "Southbound" as a song we each wanted to do - not knowing the other was bringing the same song. However, we both had live versions of the song... which were very different! We ended up not doing the song because we couldn't agree on the version to do.🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wow... I found the version I wanted to do...
