I don't know if you noticed lately that Hollywood is on fire right now. It's so bad people are losing work world wide. Hollywood is producing much more flopbusters than blockbusters. Major studios are laying off workers by the thousands. The actors and writers are on strike. Hollywood is in full panic mode. This one cheesy movie is the exception not the rule. It's like celebrating the band is still playing while the Titanic is dive bombing to Davey Jones locker.

When describing this year's box office offerings, "excitement," "anticipation" or "interest" would probably be the wrong words to use. Instead, think "schadenfreude."

Most recently, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — reportedly, the most expensive movie of the franchise — utterly failed to excite audiences with the once-reliable promise of further adventures of a beloved character. Instead, the $300 million US film did so poorly it's unlikely to earn its studio even half the money it spent making it.

Elsewhere, Dreamworks saw its worst opening weekend of all time with Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken — as the lack of a media campaign tanked any interest generated by its fairly positive critical reviews.

And The Flash bombed so spectacularly it gained the unfortunate title of biggest comic-book movie flop of all time.

It’s not just Disney: Hollywood slashes jobs as streaming bubble pops ​

Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger said last week that the Burbank company will be slashing 7,000 jobs as the firm’s streaming efforts continue to lose money and the wider economy wallows through a downturn.

As with previous slowdowns, the latest layoffs represent a blow to the economy of California — especially Los Angeles County — where film and television production is a huge engine of activity.

The US actors strike, which started last week, is running alongside the writer’s strike which started in May, and has had ripple effects on Kiwis in the industry locally and internationally, and will ultimately have economic and tourism effects.
