Even longer than that. Go back 90 years to Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR's presidency, especially as he kept winning elections. FDR drove a lot of Republicans crazy, into calling him "socialist, communist, foreign agent, traitor" you name it. The Republicans were hysterical, and some Democrats (Southern Democrats in particular). The 1950s had McCarthyism, when an alcoholic senator was allowed to engage in red baiting for years by the Republican Party, before they eventually censured him.

Fascism is a specific blend of socialism and capitalism, with tight government control of private enterprise. That is the opposite of what Republicans want. Treason is a crime, which you casually accuse a third of voters, basically the rural and some of the suburban population.
