A wayward and unresponsive business plane that flew over the nation's capital Sunday afternoon caused the military to scramble a fighter jet before the plane crashed in Virginia, officials said. The fighter jet caused a loud sonic boom that was heard across the capital region.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna Citation took off from Elizabethtown, Tennessee, on Sunday and was headed for Long Island’s MacArthur Airport. Inexplicably, the plane turned around over New York’s Long Island and flew a straight path down over D.C. before it crashed over mountainous terrain near Montebello, Virginia, around 3:30 p.m.

The plane that crashed was registered to Encore Motors of Melbourne Inc. A woman who identified herself as Barbara Rumpel, who is listed as the president of the company in Melbourne, Florida, said she had no comment Sunday when reached by a reporter for The Associated Press.

Still some unanswered questions:

If the pilot blacked out, how did the plane execute a turn and maintain level flight straight towards D.C.???

Was autopilot engaged???

What were the passengers doing while the pilot was passed out???

Did the plane lose cabin pressure and everybody was unconscious???

It reminds me a bit of the Payne Stewart ghost flight.

Not an isolated type of thing for GA aircraft losing pressurization. The 180 turn to fly back from Mass to DC could be from the pilot suffering hypoxia and being confused as to him already completing his stop in Mass. The lack of response is because he passed out after that turn.

I know a lot of pilots who will not fly above 16,000 without a O2 mask or cannelure, even if the plane is pressurized, for this exact reason. Someone on the flight deck needs to be aware at all times. Why this isn't the rule for commercial flight crews is beyond me.

I'd be willing to bet the cause was hypoxia. The plane was owned by an NRA executive, presumably all on board were heavily armed. Perhaps the nanny reached into a diaper bag for a fresh diaper and accidently fired the baby's little .32 snub nose pistol? Even a tiny hole in the fuselage would cause depressurization.

In any event, good to see the USAF scrambling so quickly and going supersonic over DC to intercept. The number of Ring doorbells catching audio/video of the sonic boom was impressive. Brave new world of surveillance.

I hope they were all unconscious. My friend, Allen flew to Fla. with two other guys in there Cessna. Upon returning and approching the small Murphy NC airfield the plane started to go off course. The guy in the copilots seat said, "why are we off course?" The pilot said, "Because we are going to crash." Allen was in the back seat. They had come in the wrong end of the field and hooked a power line. The guy in the pilot seat crawled out, burned. Only teeth were found of the others. Allen was 45. I don't fly.
