I'm a air genasi barbarian ... I was an Aarakocra .. but then I died an my option was to create an entirely NEW character or be transformed into an air genasi with the same personality and all my same stuff.

Yeah we did a couple of campaigns and I decided to keep my character and stuff. Mostly so I wouldn't have to re-learn things, but also one of things I like about D&D is the building and the growing as you go along.
