Chaotic Coffee Klatch (tea also available)

Geese are cool. I am partial to any animal that, being 1/10th my size, is willing to try and fight me at the drop of a hat.

A year or so ago I was walking in one of the local parks that is rather undeveloped and has great cover along a small stream for nesting geese. I inadvertently stumbled upon the geese as I was making my way along the creek taking pictures. First, one goose came out of the undergrowth and stared me down. Then, another. Then, another.

Until there were about ten of them. Then they started moving on me. LOL - I backed out slowly and kept facing them because you could tell they were looking for any sign of weakness and they were going to attack.

I could just read the headline. "Valley Man Injured In Gang Attack At Park".

For years there was mountain lion in Griffith park in LA. It is as spotted numerous times. It finally took out a child one day.

Mountain lions are scarier than all get out. I've seen them at "way closer than I wanted to be" range.

Back when I was a cowboy, growing up, one day I was out brush popping looking for a missing cow and I came upon a stand of sumac. My horse was skittish as we approached, ears up, eyes forward, trying to dance. I could see the bushes periodically moving with no wind, so, being tired and thinking maybe the cow was inside the bushes, I stopped and dismounted, intending to go through the bushes on foot and see if it was in there.

Suddenly I heard this low, cat-like, growl (about thirty feet away). Simultaneously the horse started backing up and plunging around. I got my hand on my saddle rifle and had a split-second choice. I could pull the rifle out and let go of the horse (and end up potentially having to walk miles home) - or I could trust the horse instincts and remount and get the hell out of there.

Fortunately, I am not braver than your average bear. I swung back into the saddle and the horse bolted. I got him back under control about a hundred yards away, then dismounted again and dug out my binoculars (and my rifle) and went to the ridgeline to glass the bushes. I am laying there on the ridgeline and suddenly this big ass mountain line comes out of the bushes, stares at me, and then heads out.

That is as close as I ever want to be to a mountain line (rifle or no rifle).

Geese are a fucking menace but they are protected… bastards
Here most of them don't pose problems, and some species are hunted yearly. But of the 2 species that are a menace, one is protected and as they get mixed, even the other aka Canadian geese (which was introduced to Europe by some stupid humans) can't really be hunted effectively. And of course no hunting on public beaches where they pose problems...

Canadian geese have a habit of blocking traffic around here, and everyone has to stop because they are protected. This is a time of year where it gets really bad... shit everywhere and traffic jams while they chill in the road. Soon with goslings.
Here you can mainly find them on the beaches and beach parks. Haven't heard of any goose species blocking the traffic here. But as they are nit native on the whole continent, they aren't protected - except no species can be hunted while nesting, i.e. no hunting whatsoever in the spring and summer, birds or game.

I almost learned the hunting season starts while living on the countryside, so many coworkers hunting. First waterfowl, the last one is then all kinds of deer.

Reminds me. There’s a place In Japan that has these smaller deer. The deer have learned to bow their heads for food. People walk up. The deer bows and gets food

Agree they contribute greatly to lake pollution (nutrient enrichment). We do our best here to chase them away. They are a problem for those protecting watersheds, creeks, rivers and lakes. Most locals will have ther dog chase them away or use loud noise to do it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Good morning to our Kiwi friends (need some coffee?, evening to our Finns and South Africans and evening to the rest of us in the USA. It was sunny here and now rain every day.

Glad to hear you are on the mend!
You didn't interrupt my sleep!
It seems that I forgot when my doctor put me on Paxlovid, that she told me to temporarily stop my bipolar meds because it would cause a interaction. I was supposed to resume my meds after 3 days and I didn't, so by Sunday I was a depressed mess, but now I'm back on track & OK!
