The difference is that one AR-15 fired bullet shot did more damage to the windows. It would've taken them longer. The police literally were a few mins out.
Unless the windows were bullet resistant, or wire re-enforced, the pistol round would have shattered the glass with one or 2 rounds.

Let's start with the fact that the AR15 platform is NOT "high powered". It's a mid range platform. If you want "high power" you'd best move up to the AR10 platform.
Put yourself in the shoes of a school shooter. What would you do if you had multiple AR-15’s and a handgun and your school of choice was fortified? Or EVERY school was fortified? It’s not exactly rocket science and the number of victims would still be high.
It's a higher velocity bullet than a handgun. Going through someone is more likely.

If it was heavily fortified the AR-15 in 5.56 mm would not be my choice at all. It is an intermediate cartridge and there are better choices. In fact the U.S. Army is moving away from the 5.56 mm due to its limitations. The new battle rifle and squad machine gun will use 6.8 mm ammunition.

There are 3 issues. 1. Keep firearms out of the hands of mentally disturbed individuals 2. Keep armed mentally disturbed individuals outside our schools. 3. Have the ability to quickly respond in the case of a breach.

Yes there are. The assault rifle ban worked. There would NOT be “millions of these weapons scattered throughout the country” if politicians in the pocket of the NRA hadn’t done everything they could to make it easier for ANYONE to obtain assault rifles. Voting them out is the first step.
While the tone of their heart might be difficult to determine, the ability for family and therapists to remove guns from people should be nationwide. Those seeking mental health assistance should demonstrate they can be responsible to continue owning their weapon, regularly. Those called out by others should demonstrate even more that they can handle one.
