Windows 11?

Don't know as my computers can't run it, which is exactly what Microsoft wanted to happen forcing you to go out and by new equipment. And I have read that it's does nothing but spy on what you are doing. Even worse that 10.

Other than that...

Haven’t tried it myself, but those geeks I have spoken to (including IT Manager relative) shake their heads and advise against it,

Windows 11 is great. If you have the hardware to support it.

I’m not sure if I would advise against or for it because it depends on how you work and how much old crap you still have.

Also Microsoft has no stake in the hardware game. Surfaces still support Windows 10 and will for years to come. Anyone can google the features and updates and differences and see if it’s for them or not. Operating systems upgrade to adhere to new guidelines and future tech. I know people who still run XP and it serves their purpose. Security and protection comes with upgrades and updates.

Again, no expert me, but to most common remark I’ve received is to stay with 10 as long as possible.

Best of all Microsoft products I have ever encountered.

I've got Windows 10. It's 95% great, but Windows Update can be really annoying. Does Windows 11 have the same automatic update system?

Microsoft made Windows XP so good that people didn't want to upgrade anymore, so Microsoft spent years trying to kill it off, and some people are still holding out on Windows XP to this day.

Windows 11 does have the same automatic patching system and it also has plenty of scheduling options for patching that no one ever seems understand.

Every piece of software whether an operating system or not has updates that require you to install. Even Macs have OS updates. Every device including phones have device updates.

Why is this an issue for people?

MS and the hardware manufacturers that preloaded that always had an unholy alliance.

Continual bloat and engineered obsolescence was always the point.

It’s a conspiracy. It’s always a conspiracy. They are all out to get us.

Isn't it obvious? It's because we are satisfied with a computer/phone that works and functions, and we don't want to risk a malfunction or breakdown. Failed cumulative updates can be a real pain.

You ever heard of a zero day exploit?

I keep getting prompts to upgrade to 11 and so far have put it off. My laptop came with Windows 10 when I bought it, and for whatever faults it may have, it's been pretty stable for me so I'd rather keep things working as is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Perhaps but a worse pain is getting hacked or having your data hijacked. Which is worse? Up to you and all Windows users. I will never understand how no one gets that software will always require patching and updates. It's just the nature of software.

What are the actual odds of that happening?

Updates clearly happen for reasons of profit for Microsoft, Apple and the likes. Windows XP was too perfect, for example, because people didn't want to upgrade anymore.

XP was so successful, machines still running it in the British NHS were zero day exploited and completely shut down due to a ransomware attack. Worldwide it hit over 200,000 machines with an estimated cost of ninety two billion dollars. Because people were running old unpatched software.

Windows have been trying to kill off XP for the last 10-15 years by ending patches, so no wonder. The problem is more cumulative updates, when you have to restart the computer and there's a risk of things going wrong and ending up with a below par computer or worse. They seem to be worse on Windows 10 than they ever were on Windows XP too. I've often had a cumulative update go to something like 20% or 30% and then roll everything back.

I have heard a lot of negatives, and like someone from above, it was from people in our IT department. I only have 10 because it came with the PC, To me, 7 is the best and all you need. I just picked up a lap top from a local computer guy and that's what's installed on it.

I got my first attempt by MS to take 11 when first thing in the morning my computer had the screen up trying to get me to install it, and trying to find the cancel and later links were deliberately hard to find.

That's one of the biggest bullshits I have ever heard.
It's far more true than not. They could have easily continued 7. But why? There was no money in doing so. The money is in convincing people they need something new. Better. Faster. Stronger. (Even if it isn't)

The money is in selling something new rather than continuing to support something everybody already has. It's called 'planned obsolescence' and it's the same reason refrigerators no longer last 30 years like they used to. They're only made to run 6-10 years at most, though no manufacturer will say that outright. The repair people will though.

I'm new to this forum, but I can definitely give you my two cents on Windows 11. IMO, it's pretty dope. I like the new UI it has. They've not changed it completely, but they've managed to give it a really fresh and modern look. Plus, the integration with Microsoft Teams is just awesome. Still, I know some guys who got Windows 11 and then had to buy cheap windows 10 key to get their old version back. Tastes differ. IMO, Windows 11 is ready to go.
