Graphing it is the best way to see what will fit. I've done it myself.

I almost always draw before doing anything in real life (well, not the placement of dinner table in the kitchen or something as simple). I also draw my modular bookshelf arrangement - aka upright view (it was easy to figure out the plane view this time).
