does anyone have a good suggestion of where to get people to make cover art? I'm happy to pay for it, but the last two people I found on Fiverr weren't... great. And I'd rather not make it myself because, frankly, I don't have an artistic bone in my body and just got frustrated when I tried.

You have to be careful these days, because a lot of it is going to be AI generated art, and you'll get absolutely crucified in some quarters for using it.

I have someone who can do them for $25 unless you want something very complicated.
If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll give you their e-mail.

Fiverr is a place to get things done really, really cheap, and you get what you pay for.

If you want something original, I'd suggest hanging around art forums e.g. DeviantArt or Artstation, finding people whose style you like, and then asking if they're open to commissions. Expect to pay a bit for it though - even something pretty basic might take a couple of hours work, and artists need to eat.

The other option is to find somebody who'll put a cover together from stock art. That may be cheaper, especially if you can find free material you're happy with, but other authors here are better placed to advise on that than I am.

AI is the latest angle to it, but services like Fiverr have always been problematic. Good art takes time and experience; if people want it cheap, the easiest way to satisfy that is ripping off somebody else's work. There was a plagiarism scandal a few years back with a professional author who hired a Fiverr-style ghostwriter to fill in chunks of her books for her and then got caught unawares when the ghostwriter turned out to have stolen material from well-known authors. (Or at least, that was her story...)

yeah, if I wanted to use AI art, I'd do it myself :p Heck, I DO use Midjourney to come up with sample ideas to hand to actual artists to make original work.

You can try GetCovers. They're the junior varsity branch of Miblart, which is a fairly reputable cover design studio. I know folks who have used GetCovers and were decently satisfied. As far as I know, they use stock imagery and not any AI-generated art but I cannot state that for certain. And both companies are based in Ukraine, if that's a thing that matters to you.

Just remember, going to GetCovers a cover is like going to the barber college for a haircut versus someone's who's been doing it for years. In both cases, you get what you pay for.

I'm also missing that artistic bone, lol, but you can save yourself a lot of trouble (and wasted time) by making the covers yourself. Just use Canva (free online tool with lots of templates for book covers), download a free photo from Freepik and add your title.

The only thing you need to remember is to choose a photo that isn't too blurry. That said, this method works for most genres, even fantasy. I made my first fantasy cover this way, and it still got to #1 on Amazon.

One more thing, though: Remember to refer to Freepik (or whatever site you used) on your Copyright page, and you'll be fine :)

I used James from goonwrite for some of mine. He has some good stock covers now and then, but his custom covers are a lot better. He uses stock images but he's also a bit of an enthusiast for AI art as well and he's good with that.

The other one I use is https://bookcoverzone.com - they're all stock and you have to really look to find something that suits but they have a good selection and they're good quality and all correctly sized.
