Finally finished and submitted a new story today and feel really on a roll to work on another, but my family keeps bugging me to watch a movie.

Which would be fine, except we've already watched one movie, and now they can't decide on what to watch next, and I'm burnt out on movies and REALLY just wanna WRITE, dammit!

I guess we have to deal with reality, especially those of us who don't get paid to write and can't claim we need the time to earn a living lol.

Children off on their own now and, in my own retirement, I have all the time I want to take to write. If the children were still here and wanted to do something together, I do be with them, knowing they'd be gone too soon.

The odd thing is that although I have the time for it, writing a story now is taking longer than it used to. I'm about to submit one of only about 7,600 words and I think I've been at it for over six weeks. Maybe it's that I'm being more careful now, but at least it's getting done.

If I may ask, what movie did they make you watch? I have trouble caring about most movies made in the last ten years or so (I'm 67 now).

Some stories flow very, very fast; some take their own time.

That's always been the case with all my stories. But as the kids have grown? Yes. There's a lot less time to write. I don't begrudge it because I love my kids, but there's a definite impact. And sometimes it happens in the midst of writing a nicely-flowing scene you're just itching to finish, all pistons firing...

But you don't look at your kid and say, "maybe later, kid. Daddy's doing important work."

Nope.

There's nothing worse that the old 'Let's watch a movie / Which movie? / Dunno, you find one...' I suppose with kids its understandable, but my wife does it to me all the time and then I spend the next hour listing off movies that she doesn't want to watch until its far too late to actually watch one.

Anyway, enough of my relationship problems...

I'd love to get your wife and my girlfriend together just to watch them try and pick a movie 🤣 🤣 🤣

We started with the first John Wick, something we've been trying to get her son to watch for awhile now. He enjoyed it.

From there is was a 30 minute debate before they wound up choosing Signs.

He'd watched The Sixth Sense a few weeks ago so wanted to see another Shyamalan film.

I don't hate Signs, it's pretty decent despite some flaws, but I was just burnt out on watching TV in general.

I did wind up enjoying seeing it again though. I did some writing after, before bed.

I have that problem sometimes.

I usually don't write when my kids are here, or when my wife gets home from work. One: because they can be distracting. And Two: because I want to spend some time with them.

But over the Christmas break, when the kids were here every day...I had little choice. I'd not have gotten anything done if I didn't just write with them here. And I was on too much of a roll with my writing to take a 2 week break. So I powered through.

That being said..whenever my wife decided that she wanted to watch something, I would often get very distracted, and my production levels dropped a LOT.

I don't have an office space...so my work space is my laptop, on a tray table, in the living room. It works when everyone is away, cause I can just put music on, and write. But when they are all here.....

I'm indulging in a bit of thread drift here. Signs came out twenty years ago, and I must have seen it on cable not long after. I'm not going into the details, but I found it rather annoying. For one thing, although he's undoubtedly talented, I have some inexplicable prejudice against Mel Gibson. You do have to be impressed that he had the patience to film Apocalypto in the original Mayan language.
