Chaotic Coffee Klatch (tea also available)

I explained that to my son when he moved to a nearby city.

The hardest things about moving to a new town are finding a barber, a mechanic and a store to supply your weird-ass hobby (wood working for me, painting for him)
Mechanics and Barbers. No shit. I've lived here 25 years now. Really still haven't found a good mechanic. Again, had one for a bit, but they closed around '08 (combination of aging and the downturn).
And for those of us with boats, we need one for that one too.

wood working and painting are weird ass hobbies? Hmmmm… now I want to know what you are making with wood? Some interesting furniture… maybe stocks or pillory? I hope… 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I am building a secret entrance to the spare room / study via a sliding bookcase, opened via moving a book.

Like most hobbies, they are weird due to our arcane knowledge on the subject. I am currently making complex arguments as to why I "need" a $350 handsaw...but will settle for the $115 one...

Think of Lee Valley tools as the Snap-on truck for woodworkers.

One of the YouTube woodworking channels I follow featured a set of Stocks as the project of the week, "For the Medieval Faire"...

"My" mechanic retired last year (the same week the started on my Jeep died, in the dead of winter).
My Barber is, like me, semi-retired (works two days a week), and he's 68 😯.

I found a marine Mechanic who makes dockside calls (he has a 20 foot trailer with a mobile shop in it). And, he's about 25 and really skilled.

Nebs:
You got your birthday wish, mostly.
Can I get a wish fulfilled for my February birthday???

OK, I have a sort of serious questions.
Today I went and got my hair cut.
The guy who did it was a real downer. I mean, he was eyeore.
Complained about the weather (ok, fine it's gonna get cold).
Complained about work. (yeah, you're busy...I get it).
Complained about his family.
Just very negative and very down.

I tried to positive or sympathetic (Oh I'm sorry about your ____'s illness, or "but it's supposed to be nice on Christmas") etc.

So here's my two questions: what do you do in a similar situation? I mean, I'm the customer and this guys just being eyeore.
And...do you think this was a calculated ploy for a pity tip? (if so, it didn't really work. I did tip well, but I was planning on that when I walked in the door).
I bet it wasn’t a ploy for a pity tip. The holidays can make some people really blue. I think sometimes people get like this and don’t even realize they are doing it… they get wrapped up in it.

It sounds like you handled it perfectly. Encouraging positivity and being sympathetic. Always be kind. You never know what someone else is going through ❤️

Yeah, that has occured to me. (that he could be down because of the holidays). I think given some of what he said, that's very likely.
And we all have bad days. I'm lucky that some of my colleagues will let me walk into their office and bitch and moan when I get pissed off.
(and likewise).
I don't know if I handled it perfectly, but I tried to be kind, as you suggest. Thanks.

Sounds familiar.

It’s all you can do, right? I mean other peoples feelings make me seriously feel awkward and I can tel this one got to ya. Weird spot to be in- trapped in the chair listening to a strangers tale of whoa.
