how can it be undone? the Saudi King made him Prime Minister which, under international law, means he has immunity. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the king used this maneuver purely to protect the crown prince from exactly these kinds of charges. Does it stink? Of Course!

Administration lawyers responded Thursday in a court filing that noted bin Salman's status as a "sitting head of government" he is "immune from this suit" under international law.

This. But I think the approach should have been to recognize this as what is done by international law (so your country gets the same treatment, as needed) but to slam it for the ploy it is and say it doesn't mitigate the guilt. And, yes, to divest ourselves as much as possible from the Saudis. They (and Pakistan, as well) are not our friends. The Saudis were behind the 9/11 attack.

how does that play with international law? (serious question) Doesn't I.L override the laying of charges as they stand even with these measures, or would they negate I.L? (I honestly don't know, hence the question)

And what happens next? Do you really believe that the enemies of the US won't do the same and murder every US diplomat they can get their hands on under the same theory?

And of course, they can claim that WE opened that door by revoking international law and custom. Which makes us pariahs in every country because that will also work against THEIR diplomats in foreign countries which hate them too.

Diplomatic immunity exists for a reason. Trying to undo it is a mistake no matter what justification you think you have.

Well, if you believe, as I do, that he isn't going to a second term anyway, there's really not much in "bringing him down." He's in office for two more years, there aren't votes enough to impeach him (not any reason too either. Doing so will only mark the Republicans as stuck on vengeance for a past they can't be proud of anyway rather than governing now), and, with gridlock in Congress not of his making, he can "it's not my fault laws aren't being passed" drift out his time.

No, I don't think the optics of his hypocritical approaches to Saudi Arabia are at all good and that he could be doing so much better on that, but I don't think it establishes any sort of a "bring him down" hold. Under the circumstances what would "bring him down" look like? How is it different from the trajectory otherwise from here anyway?

Well, no, that's been obvious over the decades--that the United States isn't abandoning the relationships. Nor did I indicate that I thought they were going to. So, you can keep your "news flash" to yourself and maybe look into the difference between "will" and "should."
