Exclusive: Georgia prosecutor probing Trump taps leading racketeering attorney

(Reuters) - The district attorney investigating whether former U.S. President Donald Trump illegally interfered with Georgia’s 2020 election has hired an outside lawyer who is a national authority on racketeering, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has enlisted the help of Atlanta lawyer John Floyd, who wrote a national guide on prosecuting state racketeering cases. Floyd was hired recently to “provide help as needed” on matters involving racketeering, including the Trump investigation and other cases, said the source, who has direct knowledge of the situation.

The move bolsters the team investigating Trump as Willis prepares to issue subpoenas for evidence on whether the former president and his allies broke the law in their campaign to pressure state officials to reverse his Georgia election loss. Willis has said that her office would examine potential charges including “solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local governmental bodies, conspiracy, racketeering” among other possible violations.

Floyd’s appointment signals that racketeering could feature prominently in the investigation. It’s an area of law where Willis has extensive experience - including a high-profile Atlanta case where she won racketeering convictions of 11 public educators for a scheme to cheat on standardized tests.

The investigation of Trump focuses in part on his phone call to Georgia’s secretary of state, asking the secretary to “find” the votes needed to overturn Trump’s election loss, based on false voter-fraud claims.

Who knew calling - and the calls were taped - Georgia’s Secretary of State, Governor, and AG, and telling them to find you 11780 votes, and mess with the election process for you, could possibly land you 20 years?

Obviously Trump didn't. I have my doubts they'll throw the book at him because that would set a precedent for other politicians. Let's hope the American Justice system has improved since the 70s.
BTW, you have the best sig line. :)

I think they may try throwing the book.

The issue is not just the phone calls made (and recorded), but also the relentless campaign by Trump and his wee, weeping hair-dye legal guy, Giuliani, to smear the election process in Georgia, claiming (falsely) that they had loads of evidence of voter fraud (they didn’t). They blamed officials, counters, Dominion machines, and Democrats, and tweeted this misinformation and held press conferences in landscape company yards repeatedly the same baseless accusations.

Even after the Supreme Court tossed their cases, they’ve carried on relentlessly with the lies and false accusations. Trump used his speech at CPAC to claim he won and that the fix was in.

They have no choice but to use the biggest book they got, to swat the orange bug and stop him from spreading lies and false information about the integrity of the election process. 2022 is just around the corner...

Part of what makes the sig line so great is that it is true. :)

Prosecutors in Georgia open criminal investigation into Trump's attempt to influence election results

Washington (CNN)A prosecutor in Fulton County, Georgia, has opened a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump for his "attempts to influence the administration of the 2020 Georgia general election."

In a letter sent Wednesday to numerous Georgia state election officials, including Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis requested that they preserve documents related to Trump's phone call last month in which he pushed Raffensperger to "find" votes to reverse his election loss.

The investigation comes as Raffensperger's office has launched its own probe into Trump's attempts to overturn the election, an inquiry that includes a review of both that call and another phone call the then-President made to a Georgia election official.

Willis said her "investigation includes, but is not limited to, potential violations of Georgia election law prohibiting the solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local government bodies, conspiracy, racketeering, violation of oath of office, and any involvement in violence of threats related to the election's administration."

"This matter is of high priority, and I am confident that as fellow law enforcement officers sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States and Georgia, our acquisition of information and evidence of potential crimes via interviews, documents, videos and electronic records will be cooperative," the letter reads.

I think that the American populace has become so punch drunk from the lies of the last administration, that they've lost sight of the gravity of the alleged crime. Fortunately it's written down. Someone, somewhere has to snare that rat

Fulton County District Attorney's Office linking Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to Trump's efforts to "find" those votes

Politico's Nicholas Wu flags a new court filing from Fulton County DA Fani Willis's office that states Graham's "actions certainly appear interconnected with former President Trump’s similar efforts to pressure Georgia election officials into 'finding 11,780 votes' and to spread Georgia election fraud disinformation."

The filing was written in response to Graham's efforts to avoid having to testify before Willis's special grand jury probe, and her office argues that Graham's actions "fall within the investigative purview of the special purpose grand jury to investigate and determine the facts of potential interconnectedness, which should include [his] sworn testimony."
The filing cites claims made by Raffensperger about a pressure campaign Graham conducted on Trump's behalf in which he "implied for us to audit the envelopes and then throw out the ballots for counties who have the highest frequency error of signatures."
so, let's be clear, graham implied tossing the ballots of entire counties... how many thousands of votes, proper, legally cast and counted votes, would that have impacted? of course, the onus would have been on the counties casting most votes for Biden, but no matter who the people were casting their ballots for it is just unbelievable this could have even been suggested.

what republican, legally casting their vote for their preferred candidate, would think it was just fine to have someone decide their vote didn't matter and could be tossed aside because someone else's vote was questionable?

Lindsey Graham?

"On 28 April 2023, Cathleen Latham, one of the 'alternate' electors advanced by Georgia's Republican Party in the aftermath of the 2020 general election in Georgia, filed a motion joining former President Trump's motion seeking to quash the final report of the Special Purpose Grand Jury in this matter," McBurney wrote. "Both motions also seek the disqualification of the Fulton County District Attorney's Office from any further investigation into or prosecution of any alleged interference with the 2020 general election. So that all arguments can be considered together, the District Attorney's Office deadline for filing a combined response is extended to 15 May 2023."

they're really trying hard :) which means they're shitting the bed.

Either Georgia or J/6 is going to nail trump, probably both.

I'm afraid that it might have to be J6 that gets Trump, as the Georgia DA is just farting around with her indictment and likely will be closed down by the Georgia legislature before her July-or-after target date.

You can't fix a broken system using a broken system. He will walk on both

The Georgia case is a slam dunk and should have been in court two years ago. There should have been a verdict long ago.

Exactly. And why I don't believe anything will come of it. Keith is right. The Republicans will replace her and the entire episode disappears

so she's not been replaced yet:

Fani Willis' Trump election fraud probe expands into 'several other states': Washington Post

The Washington Post reports that Willis' probe of Trump and his allies' post-election activities has expanded to include "activities in Washington, D.C., and several other states," which the Post notes is "a fresh sign that prosecutors may be building a sprawling case under Georgia’s racketeering laws."

In particular, Willis' team has been investigating the fact that Trump's campaign hired two different companies to investigate voter fraud accusations and then buried their results when they came back empty handed.
