I've published a bizarre fetish story- I was expecting it to be downvoted lots. Its rather perverse and strange. 1100 views and not a single vote...

@KeithD has quite rightly pointed out, I write "narrow-niche stories".

But there have been no votes at all. I was expecting to wake up with 1 or 2 low votes (as per my usual results) ...but nothing.

Intrigued!

For all of my stories, the average is around 450 views per vote. But this year’s Nude Day story, in E&V, is a huge outlier. It averages one vote for every 2100 views… I have no real idea why. I wouldn’t describe it as a niche, it’s what I thought was a relatively middle of the category E&V story.

There seems no comparison between your story and mine other than the paucity of votes. But I thought you’d enjoy hearing the mention.

I would say it's probably your Title and Description. No judgments here, I'm not saying you did it wrong, just saying that people skimming through NEW might see it and not have it grab their attention. Your other ones tell you right up front that they're about Smoking, so people who like that can take a puff.

It's something I struggle with. How much of the story do I give away? How to make it fun and punchy in the amount of space provided?

True, this one is not all about smoking though...but I get your point!

I know the longer stories get less votes, as peeps get bored before the end, but I normally get one or two votes. Its not a problem!

I understand. I've had more than a couple stories drop and basically feel like crickets. I didn't cry over it but it was... disappointing.

My guess is people clicking in, intrigued by the title, and clicking straight back out when they read your opening comments and see it's 34000 words long.

It's unsafe to assume those Views even remotely equates to readers.

Oh, I tend to work on my votes being the actual number of readers...it means they have got to the end!

Begs an interesting question that I'm sure somebody besides me knows the answer to: does a multi-page story count as "read" by clicking on the first page, or last? Or all?

All that's required is that they open the first page. I ran a test on that a few years ago. I had a script access the first page of a dormant story five times and waited for the stats to update. It counted five views.

You have at least one vote now. A 5 vote and a favorite.
My guess is the reason is the length of the story. Some click out, and for those who stick with it it may take a while for them to finish and vote.
