Way back in the 2000-2001 era Iran was steadily eroding the power of the mullahs and the Islamic extremists.
September 11th changed everything for them: specifically, Dubya referring to the country as a member of the Axis of Evil.
Although that focus-group-tested catchphrase was meant for domestic Americans to cover up the fact that the 9//11 terrorists were almost exclusively Saudis, the Iranians took it seriously: they thought Uncle Sam was gonna start nuking Iran and flocked back to religion for succor. The mullahs took their unexpected gift and used it to create an even worse theocracy, which is only now starting to show cracks from the excesses of teh Religious Police.
