Nearly 8 in 10 Americans believe that there is a two-tiered system of justice in the United States, according to a new poll.

The “National Issues Survey” of more than 1,000 likely 2022 general election voters, conducted between July 24-28 by the Trafalgar Group in partnership with Convention of States Action, found that 79.3% of Americans believe that the United States has a two-tiered justice system, with one set of laws for political insiders and another for average Americans. Notably, large majorities in both parties agreed with the idea.

The survey asked respondents: “What is your opinion of the current state of the American justice system?” Nearly 8 in 10 Americans, 79.3%, responded that “[t]here are two tiers of justice in the American justice system: one set of laws for politicians and Washington D.C. insiders vs. one set of laws for everyday Americans.” Just 11.6% of respondents answered that “there is one system of justice with laws applied to all Americans equally.” Another 9.1% of American were unsure.

Breaking the results down by party, the survey found that strong majorities of both parties, and independents, believed in a two-tiered justice system.

Fully two-thirds of Democrats, 66.7%, said they believed the United States has a two-tiered system of justice; just 17.5% of respondents said they thought there was just one justice system applied equally to all Americans; 9% were not sure. Nearly 9 out of 10 Republicans, 87.8%, said the U.S. has a two-tiered justice system; just 6.9% said there was one justice system applied equally; 5.3% were not sure. Among those who had no party affiliation, more than three quarters, 77.2%, said there was a two-tiered justice system in America; 13.8% said there was one justice system applied equally; 9% were unsure.

Saudi Arabia, China and Russia, all have equality before the law. The choice is: agree with the boss or its beheading, shooting or poison.

A two tier system is not unique to the USA it prevails in almost all Anglo/American systems, including less obvious places like India, South Africa and Kenya. USA has a unique problem in that its criminal law penalties are so savage and excessive that it is worth investing vast amounts of money in defence costs. But if you do not have the money you go down for a very long time.

I think that delays and absurdly convulated appeals systems are a major problem. When I was a youngster an uncle took me to see a murder trial in Glasgow; the guy pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to death (within half an hour) and hanged 14 days later. These days he would not even be allowed to plead guilty in the first place, which means: trial, appeal(s), Psycho reports, sentence, jailtime, parole - and the whole circus goes on and on.

The two tiers of justice are based on money and resources - things that often come with politics but not exclusively.

It’s why Donald has never been charged with a crime - he has always settled without having to admit to any wrongdoing, and even the highest penalties he’s had to pay have not made up for the profits he realized under the scams. That’s what money can do for you here in the USA.

This time Trump has broken laws that aren’t just about money, and his carelessness is obvious and understood by everyone who has ever been granted access to classified information. Donald has fucked up so bad that it’s incontrovertible, there’s no need for the jury to retire….

I'm glad that a majority of people see the State's Justice system as the rigged game that it is. Simply put, the more well connected you are politically, the more you can get away with. The people who enforce the laws rarely enforce the laws on themselves or their relatives. It is a game of who knows who, and I have personally witnessed people calling friends who are cops to get traffic tickets deleted. I know of politicians who have been pulled over for DUI and given every possible consideration to avoid actually arresting them. You could probably find a dozen videos of police telling cops "Do you know who I am?" as a way of getting out of trouble.

It is good that most of America sees this, but I also know that no one will do anything about it.

We'll just sit here and let it get worse and worse because most of us have had the spirit bleached out of us.

Or maybe the multiple cases against Trump will set new precedence, the claims of, “but everyone does it…” may inspire the IRS and various state entities to look closer at official filings and there will be a new onus of responsibility in reporting.

If one thing should be made clear by Donald J Trump is that any clown can claim anything.

Those 87 thousand new IRS agents have work to do.

...and the truely ironic thing is, the O.P. actually believes, and has stated so many times, that a certain former president should be completely above the law and should never be brought to justice for his many documented crimes.

So, in other words, this thread is pointless; yes, there is a two tiered justice system in the U.S., with the rich and powerful being able to "buy their way out of trouble (Think O.J Simpson, and more recently, Ammon Bundy and Donald Trump) and the lower economic classes often being jailed for petty or victimless crimes with only marginal (if any) evidence.

....And, depending on their perspective, apparently some people are totally okay with that!

Actually, I am looking forward to us putting a US President in prison. Can you imagine? That will mean that all future Presidents will face the same consequences. Any and all crimes they commit while in office or afterwards...

I think it will be a good thing for us to see Presidents as employees and with less reverence. They are normal people and they do not deserve special treatment or protection.

I'm eager for the Department of Justice to sink their teeth into Biden's finances and make sure that he has paid every penny of his income. Undoubtedly, this will spill over into his family (which it should). Then maybe we can put him in a cell next to Trump. Just imagine the conversations they will have after lights out.
