A Tribute to women. Wild, Bad Ass, sexy and FREE.

Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra. Carved out an empire from the eastern Roman provinces, was a good and tolerant ruler (certainly by the standards of the time) but in the end was crushed by the Roman juggernaut.

I guess you could include the much later Byzantine Empress Theodora (although she co-ruled with her husband, the emperor). At that point, the Byzantine Empire was the eastern part of what was the former Roman Empire. It lasted a very long time, too, until the Turks took over around 1490.

Nanye’hi, Nancy Ward, one of my ancestors. She was married to a Cherokee warrior. They were in a battle with the Creek tribe and she was laying behind a log chewing the bullets for her husband's musket so they would lacerate more. When her husband was killed, she picked up his musket and entered the fight. She killed several Creek warriors. For her bravery in the battle the nation declared her Agi-ga-u-e (“Beloved Woman”). She was the seventh seat on the chief's council and broke all tie votes. Her word was law. A group of warriors once had a pioneer woman captive and was about to burn her at the stake. Nancy came and took the captive away from them to save her. She was the last to have that title.

Oh, Lovecraft, you realize you've just given me permission to create post after post of video game characters. But I'll ease you in with some movie and music heroines first.

1) Michelle Yeoh in anything and everything (all at once)

Video games are welcome, I just wont recognize anyone unless they're from Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter.
That movie was frigging wild, really liked it

Wouldn't be me if I didn't get some horror in here. Short film from (under 5 minutes)Alter, the creepy guy from Human Centipede is making a snuff video. Warning the buffering is deliberate, its part of the effect

Best first 30-seconds of any video game which tells you everything you need to know about the character while telling also telling you nothing...

Fair enough, lets ease you in gently then. She's been my main girl now for nearly thirty years...

I played the original and the first couple of MK. Those, Silent Hill(original) and Resident Evil(first two I think) are the last games I played except for Halo 2 because my daughter wanted me to team up with her and play live.

Talking about Theodora, and video game characters, the Civilization series of 4X Strategy games has some interesting characters among its female leaders.

There are the classics of course like Elizabeth I of England, Catherine the Great of Russia, Cleopatra and Boudicca, but also some less well-known yet interesting figures like Queen King Hatshepsut (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatshepsut), Dido of Carthage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dido), Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Theresa), Empress Wu Zetian of China (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_Zetian), Lady Trieu, a Vietnamese warrior (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Triệu), Catherine de Medici, quite ruthless in keeping her sons on the throne of France (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_de'_Medici), Eleanor of Aquitaine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_of_Aquitaine), Dyah Gitarja, Queen regnant of the Majapahit empire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribhuwana_Wijayatunggadewi) or Christina of Sweden (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina,_Queen_of_Sweden).

Would you also include the second to last Empress of China, Cixi, who was memorable played (if briefly) by Lisa Lu in the 1987 movie? She also shows up, supposedly eight years earlier, in 55 Days in Peking, but played by an Englishwoman, Flora Robson. It was made in 1963, but it's sort of weird but amusing to see all these English and Australian people playing the Imperial Chinese Court.

Well she isn't in the Civilization games but she's also an interesting figure. Personally I find her less interesting than Wu Zetian, but well with a name like Cixi...

Wild - yes, Badass, definitely - Free, always - Sexy? Well the problem with this clip is it's first person only so you're not going to see a lot of her - you can probably assume she's in reasonable shape though.

Rest in peace, Olivia Newton John.

One could debate the message of Grease, IE the woman needs to change herself to get the guy.

But I've never seen ANY actress pull off that Sweet and Innocent transformation into Sexy and Badass as well as she did.

.
She was also called Tzu Hsi for some reason, which is her moniker in the '63 movie. I'm not up on Chinese empresses, but I'll take your word about Wu Zetian. Cixi was in power for a while - 1861 to her death in 1908.

I hope this is not too far off-topic, but I was impressed by Stockard Channing in that movie. I never knew that she graduated summa cum laude from Radcliffe in 1965. So she was quite a bit different from Betty Rizzo, although she did a great job with that role. "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee."

Where's @ChloeTzang when you need her? This is right up her alley.

Very sad to hear of her passing. A recent story of mine came to life when I realized that the 80s haircut my sweet and innocent heroine needed to have was actually the Bad Sandy cut from the end, after which it pretty much wrote itself.

I'll tell the following anedote, not because its definitely true but because the world would be more beautiful if it is.

At university (in the 1990s) I had a professor from Australia who would have been around 30 in 1978. On a trip back to his native land his mother drags him to the cinema. The conversation goes something like this...

Prior to curtain up.
Prof - "So why are you dragging me to this dumb teenage musical which you've already seen three times and which I have no interest in."
Mum - "You'll find out."

Intermission.
Prof - "Okay, so some of the tunes are quite catchy, but I still don't see the point."
Mum - "Well, the thing is honey, you remember when you were 18 years old and your Aunt Margery tried to set you up with her neighbour's daughter. And you were all 'I've got far too many options, I wouldn't be seen dead at a blind date set up by an elderly relative.' Well, two questions a) how are those options working out for you and b) can guess who that girl was..."
Prof - "No, really?...well, okay, on that occassion I might have been a bit hasty, but I'm sticking by my principles. Blind dates are generally bad news and should be avoided. Right, now you've made your point, can I go and get a ticket for [whatever more masculine 1978 hit - let's say Jaws 2] instead?
Mum - "No you're staying till the end."
Prof - "Why?"
Mum - "You'll find out."

On the way out of the cinema at the end.
Prof - "Well fuck me. Okay, who else does Aunty Margery know?"

Margery introduces him to his future wife. His philosophy in life becomes "All other things being equal, you should always say 'yes' to everything, because you never know."

[Having read the obituary today, it seems unlikely that mum would have waited till the release of Grease to gloat, Newton-John having had several international hits already by that time, but anyway...]

Grease is my guilty pleasure movie. Back in the day our Sensei suggested a bunch of us take modern dance because it helps with balance, rhythm etc. I found I enjoyed it and got pretty good at it. For a charity event I did the "You're the one that I want" with my sister. Blackmail footage...but not as much as if the one of me as Frankenfurter singing (very badly) Sweet Transvestite for another event.

Also, there was nothing wrong with the "message" in Grease because if you recall Danny did the same thing, lettering in track and ditching the leather jacket to try to change for her. It was mutual, and Grease two they did the reverse.

Please do me a favor and keep things like that out of this thread. Trust me, I can go all day and night about misogyny etc...but this is just supposed to be a tribute and a fun one.
