Chaotic Coffee Klatch (tea also available)

Ha
Always my favorite, although I love the really botanical gins too.
ve you ever tried an Aviation cocktail? I had it for the first time this year in Chicago, and fell in love. I’m not a big drinker at all, but I made an exception! It’s Gin, Maraschino liquor, Crème de Violette, and lemon juice. So good!!

I really do make stuff, but I don’t have a store. That part and most of the characters are fiction. Come to think of it, I wish I could visit my store too. 💋

I hope I didn’t kill the crush. ❤️

Oh, not at all!

Maybe we could collaborate! I’ve always wanted to get serious about leather work and making custom mirror frames…

I love Aviations. Also such a super pretty drink!

I discovered them through a stupid story that I will tell because I'd rather do that than the work I'm procrastinating on.

So I have this girlfriend who comes over to hang out and knit and such, and we started this tradition of making complicated cocktails; I used to bartend long long long ago in another existence so I'm kind of good at that. And we wanted to make this drink called a Ginger Rabbit.
  • 1/2 ounce star anise and black tea-infused simple syrup
  • 1 slice fresh ginger
  • 1 strip lemon peel
  • 2 ounces Basil Hayden’s bourbon
  • 1/2 ounce Creme Yvette
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
No Crème de Violette, you say? It turns out that the closest substitute for Crème Yvette is Crème de Violette (although having had both of these things now, I'm going to say, not a very close substitute). I could get Crème de Violette locally, so we tried that (and ordered the other).

Anyway, that's a good drink, although it's better with Crème Yvette.

The trouble with this is that it leaves you with all of these bottles of very specific liqueurs. That was maybe seven years ago, and I still have most of the Crème Yvette! So I discovered the Aviation in an attempt to actually use up the Crème de Violette which goes with basically nothing else except gin. 🤣

Those get togethers sound like a huge amount of fun! You must have some fantastic stories from your time as a bartender.

The best Aviation I have had so far was at Grill 23 in Boston. I could have drank many more than I did! 🤣 I limited myself to two. I read about substituting crème Yvette for the Crème de Violette. Like you, I end up with a lot of left over ingredients! I end up throwing a bunch away, but I don’t want to get the cheap stuff either.

I’ve usually gone for Tanqueray in the past but this time I ended up with The Botanist Islay Dry Gin because I panicked. (I was fancy and got it delivered, but they didn’t have what I’d originally ordered and the delivery guy was texting me that this was the suggested replacement, so I just said yes 😂)

It’s really good, though!
How did I miss this? The Botanist is my absolute favorite. I might be very slightly biased by the fact that it's made on Islay by the Bruichladdich distillery, but it really is a fabulous gin.
