In Europe master's degree is a must before doing a doctorate, there is no way whatsoever to jump over it.

On some fields, however, you cannot get a bachelors degree, you must go straight for the master's.

Here there are doctoral degrees that basically have a masters included. For example, my sister was in a doctoral program but realized partway through that it wasn’t what she wanted. However, she’d done enough, like all the classes, so she was able to stop out with a masters degree.

I think our doctoral programs tend to be longer as well.
