Aussies! Check in here!

Hi from chilly south east queensland. Nice to see other aussies on here. Have been lurking a while and trying to get a handle on the place.
Welcome to the thread. I'm sure you're not alone in lurking, no handles required. Just post stuff that's happening in your life. Best way for people to get to know you. You won't be a virgin for long if you do that.

Thankyou. At the moment we're looking for security camera's. A couple of months ago, my car was stolen and as a result the insurance company has changed our insurance. Because we moved to a bigger block we have to go on farm insurance not home insurance and to keep the premium down we have to do a few improvements around the block. Lockable gates, better lighting, gates on sheds, that sort of thing. I've been on at hubby about getting security camera's fitted but he's been taking his sweet time. At our Origin event i was using the lappy to record and it didn't work so there's no video of the playroom. Today, he tells me he's got a firm coming to fit a seven thousand dollar wireless system. Nothing like spoiling a voyeurs fun to get him serious. Car gets stolen... Yeah i'll get to cameras babe. Insurance goes up... Yeah i'm onto it. Faptop video fails... Here have seven thousand dollars. Camera's STAT!
Apparently they'll come with an app you can access from your phone remotely and you can turn and focus some of them. Very fancy. It's a combo of tech and voyeurism that will have him fiddling with it all for days.

Afternoon all,

Well its a typical Winter's day here in Melbourne town, chilly. Was doing the ironing this morning and could see the steam still coming of the clothes when I hung them up. All those who are working from home and have central heating are going to be paying a lot for their heating bills. One of the things people don't think about when working from home is that they have to pay for the heating and cooling which you don't see when working in an office. There is going to be more bill shock for those people.

Not sure why there is so much panic happening from industry regarding the wage increase. In all my 3 decades in the workforce I never received a 5%/yr pay rise. Lucky if you got 2.5%/yr and in a good year it could go to 3%. So all this panic and warning from the financial and private sector is absolute bullshit. There is never a good time for a wage rise in the eyes of private industry.

So the US Supreme Court has shown it makes decisions based on political lines rather than on the law in consideration with their Constitution. The last three judges that were sworn in, lied to the people and the politicians that voted them in. They are paying Rump back for their positions and have shown they are more loyal to him than their own democracy. They are now not relevant to American society. Women in US now have no control over their own bodies. There is talk they will wind back access to contraception for women. The real question is how far are these idiots willing to go? There are big fears that same sex marriage will be removed. If the highest court in the land makes rulings based on personal preference then they are not fulfilling their oath and need to be removed. Even judges are not beyond the law. It seems they believe they are gods. The law needs to work for everyone not just a minority in powerful positions.

Another week goes by and another story on LNP corruption comes out. Barrel Boy it seems designed his own job for post politics. He set this up whilst he was in govt, then changed the criteria so he would get it. It also seems that Dom either doesn't know what goes on in his govt or just turns a blind eye. There might be new people at the helm but the corruption in the NSW govt is part of its DNA. This type of thing goes on in jobs at the higher level. The LNP has said lots about people getting jobs based on merit. Seems that one of those merit criteria is nepotism.

With the latest strikes in Ukraine, Poo-tin is now meeting the criteria of being a terrorist but with the ability to travel freely around the world. The UN needs to gets serious with Russia. The strategy from Russia is simple. Wipe out all infrastructure and culture in Ukraine and that includes killing as many Ukrainian civilians as possible. It's the scorched earth theory and the rest of the world is letting him do it. This slow demise of Ukraine will go on and cost the EU and western countries billions more in support as time goes on which will impact their economies, which is what Poo-tin is counting on. Dictators don't stop until they are stopped. Thinking Poo-tin will stop is a foolish thought.

The Jan 6th committee hearings is a total waste of space unless the people who instigated the coup are prosecuted. It makes for good news bulletins with people getting outraged but if there aren't any convictions from these hearings then it's just lots of talk. Since voting it not mandatory in the US the Republicans will win again. When more people come out to vote the Republicans lose. People in the US will not come out to vote if they see that nobody is held accountable and the rich and powerful are shown to be above the law. If the average citizen had made plans to bring down the govt they would up on terrorist charges, but if you do it as a politician nothing happens to you and you can seek re-election. It is a crazy system they have in the US. It's very third world stuff. You can't have a democracy based on people doing the right thing and if they don't well that ok as well. It will always be on the verge of becoming a dictatorship. It's nuts because we are depending on the US for our own defence. If that country's democracy is in chaos then we are vulnerable.

Decided to purchase a beard trimmer yesterday. Saw one on special for less than $50 because of the FY sales. Will have to learn how to trim a beard using this new tool, so Youtube is going to get a run. Usually only watch Youtube for the music videos.

Got a big surprise to find out my local bank branch is undergoing renovations. Seems I wasn't the only one caught out. A few pensioners turned up only to discover the branch was closed. Not sure how the services will be impacted. They might use this as a reason to sack staff as they did during COVID. Heard that ANZ now doesn't have staff only ATM's and one greeter. They call that customer service these days. Now have to go to the local Westfield branch which is close but it's a pain in the butt. Takes longer to park there than getting the transaction done. Plus it's always busy. The upside is that the cake shops are just a few shops down from the bank. Plus you don't get a wet arse walking from the car to the shops. Still I just find it annoying. May have to buy more cakes just to ease the pain.

Stocked up on some red wine and cheese in prep for Le Tour that starts on Friday. Looking forward to just relaxing and watching that for the next month.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you.

Wireless cameras are good up until someone turns the power out. Make sure you get the ones with the SD cards in them for power-down recording. Thieves are all over that.
Cops love people who put Apple AirTags in their cars. Something goes wrong and you can track where it has passed within 100m of anyone's iphone. Most crooks have iphones so guess who outs themselves... We have been popping one in with secure shipments about the world and even someone running an iphone with bluetooth switched on on the plane is good enough to pick it up in the hold. $45 each, packs of 4, replaceable batteries last about 2 years.

Half the reason i got an idiot charged with theft after they returned my car was that he'd synced his phone with the stereo. I don't know much about the cameras. That's his job. We're getting a new storage box attached to our business computer and anything is better than nothing. I'm told the house camera's record onto a nas thing with a power supply back up. I don't know. The gate ones and the ones in the sheds have. oh hang on he's reading over my shoulder.
No sd cards. Cloud storage and telephone sim cards. And now he's grabbing my boobs.

Welcome - great to see another SE Queenslander check in. As far as the weather is concerned, all I can say is roll on summer!
Yes indeed. It's miserable outside today. We had an inch of rain over night and our place is like a muddy bog. Once upon a time when it was like this, hubby took me on long drives to get lunch and such but with the price of fuel like it is, a trip to town was stretching the budget. Roll on summer indeed.

Raining over east, 2 days of patchy rain for the first time in 2 weeks and now it is back to blue sky. Our farmers could do with more rain so lets hope a bit of it comes through. Winds from the north east off the land which is weird for this time of the year. Firstly it makes for cold nights (6-7deg is cold here). 18 deg day has everyone rugged up as if they are going skiing. I usually laugh at big retailers over here who start getting coats into stock in April and then ditch them on clearance in July because noone buys them unless they are heading off. It would be like Myers or David Jones sending out coats to FNQ or the NT as part of a standard pack. This year I see a few people trying to wear them about the place. Must have moved over here during covid.

After a satisfying result at the rugby against England we took the boat over to Rottnest on Sunday to give the engines a run. Water is warm in, so a pleasant swim. Heaps of people jumping off boats or swimming on the shore so good to see people getting their salt and Vit D. As the current is 22C sleeping on the water is nicer than being rugged up at home.

Oh my god, Miss swannie. We haven't risen out of single digits through the day for the last three days and today only just made fourteen. It's unheard of, unwelcome and can fuck off back to the snowfields where it belongs. the rain was welcome though. Hubby has some cereals in that will make good use of it. Just feed crops but they'll really get a go on.

Afternoon all,

Well another paperwork day for me. That's three days in a row. Thought I had everything sorted for the other lawyers only to be let down again by technology. So going into the city tomorrow to hand over the docs I couldn't send via email. The email kept complaining about the size of the attachment. So annoying. Only reason I'm going in tomorrow is that I worked out it's cheaper for me to travel into the city on the PT than sending the stuff via express post. Given that I now get a concession on the PT is makes more sense to hand deliver the docs. Sounds crazy but that's the economics of it. Also just to annoy me saw that the train station I normally use is having works done around it. So it's on the tram for a bit to get to the next station on the other line. Hate those buses replacing trains options. Then heard the forecast for tomorrow is some of the wet stuff. At least won't have to put up with the kids on PT in the afternoon, they're all in the shopping centres. As I found out yesterday.

So going to Bali now allows you to bring back yet another nasty. Lots of people going to Bali have had foot in mouth, now they can bring back foot and mouth on their shoes apart from the normal stuff they bring back or catch over there. The microbes are getting their revenge on humans.

We have a new Aussie women's no.1 tennis player. Saw some of her match which was entertaining. She hardly looked puffed compared to her opponent. Not much of a tennis fan. Can't sit through 5 sets without switching the channel. Been looking at Le Tour, haven't had my cheese and wine night yet.

Not troubling the petrol gauge much since I've staying on my side of the city. Was out on the weekend and saw the difference in prices in the various suburbs. Cheapest I saw was $1.97, then saw another one close by for $2.39. Not sure who would go there.

Albo been racking up the frequent flyer points which has reset our station on the world stage. The LNP thought Albo would fall on his face. They have been rather silent but then had a shot at him for not contacting Dom whilst in a war zone. They've got nothing except cheap shots. Seems also funny that they are going to hold Albo to account for LNP fuckups. They seem to of forgotten the new govt is dealing with the lack of action of the LNP in the last 10 yrs. Now a major issue is the inability of the poles and wires to accommodate renewables. WTF were the previous govt doing apart from playing with themselves and faction fighting. Makes you wonder what else will rise to the top that wasn't addressed by the previous govt in the last 5 yrs.

Had been cold most of the day and it's getting really chilly so reckon tonight is a good night for a hot "curry". Using the colonial term there for all Indian food. Seems to blow people's mind when I tell them that "curry" is a colonial construct most of which doesn't have any relationship to Indian food. Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, etc is all for the Anglo palette. Doesn't exist in India. Kinda like pizza here which is nothing like actual pizza in Italy. No fucking pineapple on pizza over there. Stop doing it people. Pineapple on a burger doesn't make it Hawaiian it's just a burger with pineapple. Why you would ruin a burger with pineapple is beyond me.

Hope the rest of the week is good for you.

Had no idea using The Cloud came with grabbing boobs. Still not enough incentive for me to use The Cloud which is code for your stuff is sitting on someone else's server. Disconnected my link with The Cloud. Annoying that you have to opt out. Tech is over rated.

Actually, quickly on the subject of curry. The English took the concept of a curry, it got to Japan, then they perfected it to be a staple. A 500 yen curry and rice with a pork cutlet at any railway station is the working man's lunch. A chain of curry stores there, Coco Ichiban, has just started up curry rice stores all over India as a fast food outlet. And correct, that flavour is not there so they are going crazy for it. Talk about a full circle. If you had been able to get shares in them when they tanked because the market thought they were mad, you would have been 5000% up today.

Nothing wrong with pineapple on pizza, so long as it is sweet pineapple. Having the pizza oven outside has led to a lot of experimenting. I can assure you that even more superior to pineapple is putting peach slices and few lines of balsamic. If you think they go mad when you say pineapple, wait until you say peach slices please.

The cloud does have a habit of having copious boobs on it...

The Indians probably think the curry is an English thing and very exotic. OK hold the pizza! Peaches on a pizza oh dear. The world has gone totally kookoo. I can understand pineapple and other fruit grilled on the BBQ or even in an oven, but not on pizza dough. Could even understand a fruit focaccia cooked in a pizza oven, would eat that. But not on a pizza.

I made the mistake when in Italy to ask for chilly on my pizza, much to the confusion of the waiter. What I got was a pizza local style with a side cup of chopped chilli in oil, was olive oil so another no no. Had to laugh at that, but the waiter seemed pleased with himself.

Amazing how many people don't understand that their files in the Cloud are sitting on someone's server. Met an ex-work colleague several years ago who was bragging to me that he had cut down expenses by getting rid of his IT guys and putting everything in the Cloud. I asked him how he kept his IP safe in the Cloud. The look in his eyes told me he hadn't thought about it clearly and was more focused on cutting costs. That conversation and the boasting quickly stopped.

Yes but on the topic of curries. My.... birth person... used to put pineapple in curries. Along with apple.
There are reasons i do not call her my mother.
Those are two of many.

Apple in curries is quite common, I could imagine pineapple in a dry curry. It is too stringy to break down in a normal curry. Acidic fruit tends to cut the meat fat down, but you are into crossover territory then between middle eastern and the stuff called curry. Most supermarkets now have Japanese curry rue in the international food aisle. Well worth having a few packs in the cupboard, it makes it so easy to put together a decent one.

What about bananas in curries, dropped in right at the end?

We always had banana and dessicated coconut as sides when I was a kid, these days Patek's hot lime pickle is essential

If I ever put pineapple or banana in a curry my mother would of disowned me.

Nope noooo. Nahah. Yep fruit in curries are common in SE Asia due to the mash up of cultures. The Indian influence is strong in those countries which is why they have that mash up of sweet and hot. Not my style of curry, more into the Indian curries.

Afternoon all,

Seems I've sparked off a whole discussion on what is or not a curry which I'm aware is totally an Anglo discussion. The people who actually know about this stuff are just shaking their heads...I'm one of them. I only use Bolst's curry powder which is made in India. Been around for many generations. Their pickle can be hard to get. Not all Indian groceries carry their line but it's worth hunting them down. As for a basic spice blend for a curry, it's just three ingredients, ground coriander, turmeric and mustard seeds. Can get these as individual spice packets. The portion of each is to your taste, but just be aware that the heat comes from the mustard seeds so go easy if you don't like the heat. The ground spices will last 1 year if you keep them in an air tight container. No need to store the whole spices unless you want to make more work for yourself. Lastly spicy doesn't mean hot. Don't like the hot, don't add chilli, there is enough heat in the mustard seed. Another option to adding chilli is to use the chilli powder, only need a very small amount if you can't tolerate the hot. Can't stand those tele chefs that add chilli but remove the seeds first. What is the point of that? Just add some chilli powder. So making a curry is easy if you know the right technique. Nothing to be scared of. Give it a go.

Well it didn't take long for a COVID cruise to be found. From the interviews the people on the ship were just in denial. Not sure if that was for the cameras or for their friends and family who told them they were nuts for going on cruise given COVID is far from over. Now we are bracing for another wave of COVID to come thru the place before Winter is done. Had another friend who caught COVID but got it from work. Now she can't smell or taste anything. COVID hasn't gone anywhere, just our belief that it has.

No tissues in Woollies. Had to go to those warehouse people to get a couple of boxes. I'm continually surprised that the two major supermarket brands are out of stuff that you can get in the small supermarket chains. There are tissues in chemists but none in Woollies and Coles. Can get drinks in IGA I can't get at Woollies or Coles. Same items so the real question is why can't these larger supermarkets get supplies of these items? Can't be the producers.

So footbaths for people coming back from Bali. Not sure how that is going to go with the thong brigade. The chemicals in those baths aren't meant for bare skin. They might have to do a thong swap. Bins of disposed thongs for fresh ones purchased that the airport before you board the plane. So Bali Thong might become a thing. So if you see anyone with blisters around the mouth and limping you know they've been to Bali then give the vets a call.

Albo is off OS again. The guy doesn't sit still for long. Can't say he isn't earning his salary. He's like the energizer bunny. Still seems a bit odd to watch a press conference where the pollies are not talking shit. Apparently two Chinese officials tried to gate crash a leaders meeting at the PIF only to be stopped by security and removed. Don't want to mess with those Fijian security dudes. They are big. Fiji is still the only country I've been to where the local Macca's had a security guard and this dude was big. But you can drink the water in Fiji, just got to tolerate the heat and humidity.

Well another rainy day here in Melbourne town. Was only 9 at 2pm yesterday and I had to start up the heater early in the day. At least it was in double digits the same time today. We have a good soaking of rain over the last few days. Getting some dry days before the week is done. Then more wet stuff. Yep I get it we are in Winter, but this Winter seems wetter than last year. Heard that this Summer is also going to be wetter than the last one.

Getting chilly again so off to turn on the heater. Hope the rest of the week is good for you.

Sitting here nervously checking in prior to state of origin. I couldn't really give a shit how the game goes but we are hosting another work party and i am feeling a little crowded and like it's got far too big for comfort. It will be our last 'big' event i think. Just feels a bit out of control. There are now about fifteen of my hubby's colleagues and friends attending and maybe i'm just nervous as usual. I'm sure it will be fine.
I need to go and make an appearance shortly.
I was interupted as i type this with tragic news that far outshadows the playfulness of my evening. A lovely friend and the sister of one of my closest friends growing up died suddenly from an asthma attack at age fortyeight.
Wow. Just fucking wow. That's some fucking sombre perspective.
She was a really generous soul. She was a really bright spark in whatever part of the world she lived.
Celebrate every moment you have the people you love. I'm not sure about tonight now.
I'll think and drink and see how it all unfolds.

Ok need it to stop raining for a bit. The grass is saturated and the Lab taking off on it to chase after his ball is just sending mud and grass chunks flying. Kind of looks like mid-winter Victoria Park in the old days, more mud than grass.

Did a couple of days up in the Kimberleys last week. You can't help but love it up there is you get a chance to visit. There is a serious need to build bigger cities up that way and populate around the place. Bigger runways (well, maybe just access some of the mining commute runways) and set it up as a food bowl for SE Asia with direct cargo flights.

The madness days have returned. Red Rooster in Karratha and Port Hedland are looking for managers and kitchen workers and have resorted to offering fly in fly out rosters. Noone can get accommodation up there so they go to intense levels to keep supply running.

Lots of people are feeling the same with crowds. Noticed here in Melbourne that people are masking up again without being told. I'm now masking up in smaller stores where I can't keep away from people.

Evening all,

Just escaped my rather warm lounge room for a bit of a cool down. The temps this morning have been bloody cold which is saying a lot for me as I usually like the cold, but not down to 1-2 first thing in the morning. Has been below zero is some of the outer suburbs of Melbourne this week. This is only temporary. Once we get some rain in a few days the morning temps will be back to normal. Have had to resort to firing up the heater mid day just to take the chill off. Certainly is weather for dicks to go turtle.

So Barrel Boy has been outed by one of his own in regard to that OS trade job. He was a dick when he was in govt and it seems he hasn't changed now out of govt. Real question is how much did Dom know about this? You can imagine other people in the NSW govt knew that Barrel Boy was lining up this job for himself. His ego is such that he would of boasted to others that he has this job lined up for this retirement. People like that just can't keep that type of news to themselves.

Seems ironic that the LNP is now calling for the border to Indonesia to be shut given their opposition to border closures over the last 2 yrs. They demonised the WA govt and called Danny Boy a nazi for those lock downs and their supporters brought nooses to the front of the Vic parliament. Now they want the current govt to shut the border to all Indonesian territories but happy for live exports to continue to Indonesia. Just more politics. If the govt banned all visitors to and from Indonesia then lots of people including the service and export industries would be up in arms about the ban. And the LNP would then be complaining that the border is shut and it's hurting the economy. Fuckwits.

As for people coming in from Indonesia well we already have the cattle runs for live export. Just get them to run through those into a sheep dip. Problem solved. Whilst 99% of the people will do the right thing, you only need one fuckwit to not follow the rules to bring foot and mouth into the country. We can't get people to wear masks in this country, good luck trying to get them to clean their shoes and be honest about where they have been in Bali. Put more effort into controlling it in Indonesia. Screen people before they get on the aircraft. The other issue is who is paying for these extra border protections? If it's the tax payer then why are my taxes going to pay for someone who wants to go for a holiday in Bali? Add those costs to the cost of a ticket in the form of tax. We already pay an airport tax on every ticket.

Funny how petrol prices have come down again now that school holidays are over. A coincidence? I think not. Prices still variable around the place. In my little area today saw the petrol price was $2.19. It's cheaper a few suburbs away. Under $2 in some suburbs. Now that I don't have a need to travel across the city on a regular basis am saving on petrol. Just travelling locally. Decided not to do much till after Winter is over. Nothing is urgent, just more bills to come before Winter is done.

Hope the weekend is good for you.
