Is It Possible for a Reader to Delete Their Comment?

A minor mystery: I was checking my stats and noticed that the comments count on one story was reduced by one. I don't pay much attention to the comments beyond noting the new ones, so even if I looked back I wouldn't know which one was removed. I didn't delete it, that's for sure.

No, I don't think it's possible for readers to delete their own comments.

Laurel might delete a comment if it were reported to her.

Readers didn't used to be able to change their vote, but now they can. Now, maybe they can change or delete comments, too. It might be interesting to test.

I've read anecdotal evidence over the years that there's a word bot trawling all the time to find hate content - so it's possible there's a systems approach as well as a reporting approach. I think Simon has seen Comments which he didn't delete, later disappear.

The bot thing makes sense. I looked again at the comments on this story and a brief memory flash recalls one that was particularly (and unnecessarily) hateful. Pretty sure that was the one that got zapped.

No matter. Just curious. :shouldershrug:

Also possible another reader reported it.

As EB noted, I've seen comments to my stories disappear. Most if not all were extremely hostile, obscene negative comments, primarily to my one Loving Wives story. I'm pretty sure Laurel, or some one or some bot working for her, did that, as opposed to the readers themselves.

Maybe the comment queue is filtering some stuff out, but I doubt it's much beyond pure spam. Otherwise, the LW trolls would be screeching like banshees.

Odds are that any removed comments ( beyond those that don't survive the queue... Not sure if those register in your control panel before they pass out of the queue into public view ) are wholly based on reports. I think we'd see a whole lot more complaining if there was any kind of attempt to do more than basic spam filtering of comments through automation.

The reader can't delete their own comment, but the author can delete any comment they want on their stories.

.....

Yes, author deletions are allowed. But I don't. Something or somebody else deleted a comment on one of my stories, and I noticed.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Then it's most likely it was reported for some reason and the moderators took it off. Even if you don't want it gone, they could still take themselves for whatever reason they say it had to go.

....

Nope, it looks like there are no options for someone to delete a comment after they have posted it.

As for the bot thing... I think it's just a bot looking for spam comments.

And yes, Laurel can delete anything she doesn't think is appropriate as a comment. Or a reported comment if the report is correct about the comment.

Other that, only the author has the right to delete comments. And I have in my years here deleted many a comment, mostly personal attacks and comments that show that the reader didn't really read the story and just started spouting shit about what he/she doesn't like about what I write. (Loving Wives of course)

What if a named user (Literotica account) posts comments and then subsequently requests that their account be closed? Would any comment made by a now non-existent user remain? In a lot of other sites they wouldn't,but since Literotica allows anonymous comments, who know?

As I understand it, if the site bans an account holder, all their comments (both to stories and in the forums) disappear; whereas when an account is closed at a user's request, any story comments will remain, and it's up to the account holder to remove their forum posts (by deleting text and substituting at least five characters). However, if someone else has reposted a comment in a forum thread, that reposted comment will remain.

In other words, the site can purge, but someone leaving must purge themselves first, before their account is closed.

Motto: think before you post, because thoughtless thoughts might be forever.

Actually, this is no longer required. You can actually have a null post. I did one by mistake.

And I don't think banned users posts are deleted, maybe just the post that got them banned.

Ah, okay, no five characters.

I was sure a purge of a banned account was thorough - for example, spam accounts - there's not much point removing just one post, you've got to remove them all.

Remember when, before the comment moderation got put in, folk frequently commented that a spam message would suddenly disappear, and others would chime in, " Yep, went from my file, too"? Or am I thinking of PMs? Maybe.

Hell, who knows anymore... so many changes, not enough explanation.

I may have been wrong about the character thing... I just tried it again and no go.
